TRAINED NURSES

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ASSOCIATION The Hospital Committee will recommend to the Otago Board that, in connection with tho resolutions forwarded by the Trained Nurses’ Association, the following observations of the medical superintendent ho approved :—■ Resolution: ‘’That no nurse should be appointed to a sister’s position until sho has been a staff nurse for at least two years a tier passing -ic state ex amination in her own or other hospital or both.” Observation: ‘‘ 1 am of opinion that at the present time if a stalf nurse, by which 1 mean a certificated or registered nurse, has further training in a general hospital for one year sho should be eligible at the end of that time for promotion to tho position of sister.” Resolution: ‘‘ That before a stalf nurso is appointed to the position of ward sister sho should pass a further test by the matron or her deputy in—(a) practical nursing, (b) ward management, (y) teaching methods.” Observation: “During tho fourth year the certificated or registered nurse is receiving further experience and training in practical nursing and ward management. She also teaches the juniors under her care. Tho nurse is under constant supervision in her fourth year, and should Only be recommended for promotion when she lias shown proper trained capacity for the position.” Resolution: “That in hospitals where a fourth year’s service is expected of the nurso she should have the opportunity of qualifying in one'of the following:—Alatcrnity nursing, child welfare nursing, neuropathic nursing, tuberculosis nursing, district nursing.” Observation : “ I agree that opportunity should be afforded to the fourth-year nurse to specialise in some particular branch of nursing.” The committee will further recommend that the suggestion from , the visiting medical staff as to rearrangement of duties of honorary physicians bo approved.
