SOVIET DEGREE

ATTEMPT TO ABOLISH CHRISTMAS SHOPKEEPERS FINED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 18. The Riga correspondent of ‘ The ‘ Times ’ states that because the prohibition of Christmas shop window displays on December 14 was widely ignored, the Soviet authorities inflicted heavy fines on the shopkeepers, and threatened more drastic penalties if the fines were ineffective. The Soviet newspapers declare that it is incomprehensible that State-owned shops and eo-oporativo stores accumulated great stocks of goods specially associated with Christmas and decorated their windows with Christmas festoons. The Government is determined to terminate the “ offensive spectacle.” Curiously enough, the Soviet factories will close on Christmas Day, the workers refusing to alter the date of the holiday, but the authorities warned them that it will he illegal to celqjbrato Christmas, either according to the old or the new calendar. A large proportion of citizens will celebrate both days.' —London ‘ Times ' Cable.
