ARRIVED.—December IS. Kaiapoi, s.s. (6.10 p.m.), 2,003 tons, Gray, from Westport via Bluff. SAlLED.—December 18. Waipahi, s.s. (4 p.m.), 1,783 lons, Fraser, for Auckland via ports. Katoa, s.s. (11.50 p.m.), 2,48-1 tons, Bilton, for Bluff, ARRlVED.—December 19. Holmdale, s.s. (7.20 a.m.), 681 tons, Williams, from Wellington. THE FERRY SERVICE. Tho Maori, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.55 a.m. to-day, and passengers and mails connected with tho express. Tho Kaiapoi, which arrived last night from Westport via Bluff, is to sail tonight for Oamaru and Timaru to complete discharge of her coal cargo. ’ The Katoa, which sailed late last night, i« expected to leave Biulf_ on Thursday. She is due hero on Friday to load out for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. Tho Holmdale arrived hero this morning from Wellington to load and discharge general cargo before sailing this evening for Wellington and Wanganui via ports. The Karetu is expected to leave Lyttelton on Thursday for Dunedin, and after discharging coal proceeds thence to Bluff and Sydney. The Kawatiri is expected to leave Sydney to-morrow for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Timaru. She should arrive at this port about December 28. The Waipiata was to leave Auckland to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton, Timar i, Oamaru, and Dunedin. An expected arrival at Bluff'on Friday is the Kent, from Wellington and Napier, to load general cargo.* She will proceed later to Timaru, Fort Chalmers, and Wellington, finally clearing tho latter port on January 10 for London, via Panama and Curacao.
The Canadian Conqueror is timed io leave Halifax on December 24 for New Zealand. She is due at Auckland about February 5; thence Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, and Dunedin. Tho A. and A. Line’s chartered steamer Bloemfontein, which left New Vr,rk on November 23 and Newport Nows on November 30, cleared Panama, on December 11 in continuation of her, voyage to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is duo at Auckland about January 4.
The Marine Department has decided to establish on the summit of the small peaked islet (Mnrimotu), lying close eastward of North Cape (Otau) a group flashing white light showing two flashes every sixty seconds. Tho light will be established to-morrow. Tho Commonwealth and Dominion Lino steamer Port Bowen, which loaded part cargo at Glasgow, is now completing her loading at Liverpool. Tho vessel is scheduled to leave the latter port on Dccembr 22 for Auckland, Welington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin.
CANADIAN BRITISHER DELAYED. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. advise that tho Canadian Britisher, which is now on her way from Auckland to Wellington, is to discharge cargo at Timaru, and her arrival date at this port has been advanced from December 23 to December 29. The vessel is carrying motor cars and steel products from Montreal, and steel products from Sydney, Cape Breton; and after completing discharge here the vessel is expected to sail on December 31. THE PORT WELL! NGTON. Messrs J. Swift and Co. advise that the Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Wellington is now expected to leave Napier Anally on December 29 lor New York and London, via Panama. The vessel will cany the following passengers from Dunedin: — Mrs M. H. Fraser, Misses C. G. Fraser, M.T Fraser, M. L. Fraser, and Master W. D. Fraser. THREE NEW MOTOR SHIPS. Of the three 17,000-ton motor ships which are being built for tho New Zealand Shipping Company, the first to be completed will be the Rangitiki, which is scheduled to leave Southampton for New Zealand on February 15, and to leave New Zealand on her homeward voyage on April 27. 'The other two new vessels will be despatched from England for New Zealand in September and October next. UNION COMPANY’S NEW SHIPS. Three new ships have been ordered by the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., to meet tho increasing requirements of traclo (states ‘ Shipping and Commerce of Australia’). On© is understood to
bo a replica of the Aorangi, on the Van-1 couver-Sydney run. The Aorangi lias! been, and, as a matter of fact, still is! a successful and popular ship on the Pacific, and her almost five year’s service must have given her owners all j thv> information and data they could need in connection with the advantages , or disadvantages of motor ship opera-! tion. It is known that tho company! favours the motor ship. ! The Niagara will be withdrawn from j the Vancouver run, her place being 1 taken by one of tho new vessels. Another of tho new ships will be a fast turbine ferry of 5,000 tons for the service between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The arrival of this ship will release the turbine ferry Maori, ■which will then take the place of tho Oonah in the Mellionnic-Tas-manian trade. GRAMA’S PASSENGERS. Returning to England after making her maiden voyage to New Zealand the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Coniimny’s new motor ship Karaniea lelt Auckland last Thursday afternoon for London with over 12,000 tons of Now Zealand produce. l '' Tho cargo was loaded at Port Chalmers, Bluff, Lyttelton, AVcliiugton, Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. Tho cargo consists of 67,000 carcasses of mutton, 73,000 boxes of butter, 24,800 crates of cheese, 560 carcasses of pork, 3,IKK) bags of veal, 11,600 bales of wool, 750 bales of llax, 310 bales of skins, 300 casks of tallow, 6,000 cases of milk powder, 300 hides, 400 sacks of seed, and a quantily of general merchandise.
THE OLIVEI3ANK. Now twenty-two days out from Alelbcunio, the ‘Finnish four-masted barquo Olivobank is expected to reach Auckland shortly. The vessel is en route from Seychelles with a lull cargo of about 4,000 ions of phosphates for discharge at Auckland. Owing io an outbreak of beriberi when tho vessel was in the Indian Ocean she had to put into Melbourne for medical attention for tin crew. The voyage was resumed on November 26. On account of the vessel’s prolonged stay in the tropics it is expected there will bo a considerable amount of marine growth on the hull, and in consequence her progress will be much delayed.
SYDNEY PASSENGER SERVICE. With the Christmas season commencing, tho liner Niagara and tho steamer Alarama, which are duo on Monday and Tuesday respectively, will have heavy passenger lists for Auckland. The*Alarama, leaving Sydney on Sunday, was a full ship, and also had a heavy cargo. Tho mail liner Makura, from San Francisco, arrived at Wellington on Monday, and left the following day for Sydney, and later in the week tile Maunganui, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday irom Sydney, will sail on the return trip. In order that both the Alarama and Maunganui may reach Sydney prior to Christmas day they will take their departures to-morrow. i VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
