Tli'o Hon. \V. 15. Taverner _ (Minister of Railways) will remain iu Dunedin till tlio middle of January, when ho will start on a tour of tho North Island railway system. Sir Charles Statham, Speaker of tho House of Representatives, was in Christchurch on Sunday, when ho laid tho foundation stone of the new wing of the Cathedral Grammar School, and was presented with a silver trowel to mark the occasion. Viscount Hampden and party went off by the -11.34 train to-day. They stay a while in Christchurch and Wellington, then proceed to Rotorua and Auckland, leaving for -England after the first week in February. Sir John Roberts, Mr G. R. Ritchie, and Mr S. K. Sleigh started this morning for Wellington on Union Company business. Mr C. W. Rattray joins at Christchurch. Mr T. S. Searle, president of the New Zealand Master Rakers’ Association, went by train to-day to Chritclmrcli, where the New Zealand Wheat Research Institute is to meet. Mr George Jilack, Ot ago manager for Dalgety and Qp., loft by the 11.34 train this morning to attend the company’s farewell at Wellington to Mr AV. D. Stewart, who has been promoted to the position of superintendent in Australia in succession to Sir Henry Braddon. Mr W. S. Bennett, manager of the Wellington branch, takes Mr Stewart’s place as Dalgeiy’s superintendent for Now Zealand;-Mr H. N. Eiby, of Hamilton, steps up into the position vacated by Mr Bennett; and Mr J. B. Moodic becomes sub-manager of tho Wellington brunch. 1 Jn recognition of a lifelimo which tho Rev. A. S. Hill, head teacher of Waipahi School, having obtained an appointment on tho staff of the Anderson’s Bay School, was tendered a complimentary social. Mr T. E. Whiteside, who presided, presented Air and Mrs Hill with a travelling nig and suit ease respectively. Members of tho School and Hall Committees and of the Lawn Tennis Club referred to tho good work Mr Hill had done on these bodies and also on behalf of the Amateur Theatrical Club, of which Mr Hill was a director. Air D. Hunter presented the guest of Ibo evening with a set ol military brushes. , , Mr T. B. AUNcii, ol Hastings, who lias been promoted to tho magistracy, and is to take up his duties at Wellington, was born in Invercargill, where his fattier, the late Air 1. i}. M'Ncil, practised «s a •••tvil engineer. He was educated in Dunedin, and, as a votith, was engaged in the firm of Messrs Bathgate and Woodhouse, barristers and solicitors, and, later, was associated with the late Sir John Hosking whilst lie was practising here. in 199 1 ho • was admitted as a solicitor by the lafo Sir Joshua William, and, at the end of 1903, ho joined Mr E. C. Cutton, now senior stipendiary magistrate at Auckland, iu his practice at Nascby. Uu Mr Cuttcn’s appointment to tho magistracy in PJO7, Mr AUNoil acquired his practice. Whilst m Nascby Mr AUNeil was actively interested in public affairs until bo left there to go ti Hastings in 1910. Jn Hastings bo assumed, the management of Messrs Cotterill and Humphries's local branch and continued in that capacity until 1920, when, with his partner, Mr I'. P.
