ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
BODY FOUND. Word was received by the Bluff police last evening- that the body of a man had been found at Cable Bay, Ocean Beach. It was identified as that of R. J. Hyndman, traveller for J. M. Brown, Ltd., and formerly manager of Mackerras, and Hazlett, Ltd. It is understood that the body, which was found near the seashore, had not been in the water.—Press Association. EVIDENCE OF TRAGEDY, A party in a launch, while off Black Rock, one and a-half miles from Auckland Harbour, found a capsized canoe bearing the name of Bevel. The police ascertained that Horatio Hawkins, a resident of Devonport, left his home at midday on Sunday for a row in a canoe, and had not returned yesterday morning. The police are searching the beaches.—Press Association. FOUND UNDER BRIDGE. An employee of the New Zealand ‘ Herald,’ who was crossing the Grafton Bridge over the Symonds street cemetery (Auckland) at 2.45 yesterday morning, heard groaning underneath. He informed the police, who found in the gully a married man named Victor Charles, with a compound fracture of the right leg. He was removed to hospital, where he died at noon.—Press Association. SOLICITOR’S FATE. A body discovered in the Waikato River at Huntly yesterday afternoon is believed to be that of A. H. Gascoigne, a well-known Cambridge solicitor, who disappeared last Monday, his car being found on the bridge over the Waikato at Cambridge. An inquest will be held at Huntly.—Cambridge Association message. GUN ACCIDENT. L. Knapp, of Motueka, was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital with a bad wound in the leg caused through a rifle going off accidentally while he was on a shooting expedition at Baton. He was walking along with the carcass of a deer on his back, and dropped his rifle butt downward. It went off, and the bullet entered his leg, badly shattering it. It is hoped that the limb may be saved.
