SUCCESSFUL ATHLETIC FIXTURE
OTAGO CYCLING CLUB’S EFFORT GORE GIRL'S BRILLIANT RUNNING Favoured by fine weather, the Otago Amateur Cycling Club Held a most successful athletic and cycling meeting at tho Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, and though tho track was on the dead side after the recent rain some fast times were registered, and in the majority of the races the finishes were unusually close. Tho outstanding feature of the gathering was the great form shown by a Gore girl, Miss V. Nichol, who was making her first appearance on the running track in open Miss Nichol, who is a well-known Eastern Southland hockey representative, was off Syds in the 100yds ladies’ handicap, and 'sho showed the field a clean pair of heels to win comfortably by Byds against tho breeze in 11 3-sscc. Miss Nichol showed such exceptional promise that it was then decided to run a 100yds Indies’ invitation scratch race, in which, pitted against some of Dunedin’s best ladies, including Miss M. PetD t. the Gore girl won without difficulty by live yards in 12 3-ssec, which was good time against thm breeze and on a dead track. Her performances at the Otago championships will bo watched with much interest. _ E. Fish ran a sound race in tho mile handicap, which ho won, olf 100yds, iu 4min 31 2-ssce, and tho Otago hop, step, and jump champion, R. O. Johnson, showed a return to form in this event, in which, off scratch, ho was second, his triple leap being Ho tied for first place in the broad jump handicap, his actual jump being 18tt lOin, though tho best jump was that of tho scratch man, L. Milne, who did 19ft Sin. While tho running events were well contested, tho sumo may well bo said of tiio cycling, which was really the principal feature of the programme. Largo fields and exciting finishes made for goori sport, bub it was unfortunate that after winning tho mile A grade handicap brilliantly in good time J. C. Fogarty, a contender for championshi') honours, should have Had the misfortune to experience a bad spill is bile being pushed off at tho start of the qvarter-milo handicap. Tho fad affected him in subsequent races, m which bo did not show his true form. A. Fanner won the quartcrmilo handicap in .good style, and the three-mile Cycling Club handicap was .iron by S. Brernford, tho Otago champion, who made a good return to lorm. Good form was shown by several other riders, A. L. llosenbrock being one who rode well. After a, series of races tho Paul Cup (fur half-mile handicaps), open to members of tho Cycling Club, was finally decided, a present-season rider in P*. Fraser being tho winner. Considering tho length of the programme it was gob through in good time, the conduct of tho meeting leaving little to bo desired, thanks to the efforts of tho president of the Cycling Club (Mr J. A. Johnston), club officials and members of tho Otago Centre, including Messrs E. L. Macassoy, ?. AV. Breen, and 11. T. Emmersqn. Mr C. K. Heaton carried out his duties as Press steward with Ins customary thoroughness. Results: —■ CYCLING EVENT'S. ONE-MILE A GRADE HANDICAP. J. C. Fogarty (scr) 1 A. Farmer ( 90yds) and A. L. Rosenbrock (25yds), dead lient 2 Eight starters. Fogarty jode a splendid ly-j udged race, and with two Japs lu go was in .second place just behind p, Traill (50yds). Fogarty and Traill were practically together at tho hell, but tho former shot away along tho bade, and, riding like a. streak, finished strongly to win by five lengths, Rosenbroek spurted up tho straight, but Farmer challenged him over tho last 30yds, "» fast finish resulting in a dead heat for second -place, Traill tailing to finish on. Time, 2min 27 3-ssec. Paul Cup Half-mile Handicap.—C. Lucas (35yds) 1. P. Fraser (Gsyds) 2, AV. Isaacs (00yds) 3. Five starters. Fraser led over the first lap, but Lucas wont to tho front at tho bell, and, though Fraser hung to him well, Lucas maintained his advantage to win by a length; half a, length between second and think Time, Imin C 4-ssec. —Final.— P. Hodgo (10yds) ... 3 Thcso three riders had tied for tho Paul Cup, awarded for a scries of races over tho half-mile, and this race was necessary to decide possession of the cup. Lucas displaced Fraser irr the lead at tho start of the second hip, but Fraser came again and sprinted strongly np tho straight to win hy four lengths, Hodge a long way back third. Cockerill ••• ... ... 3 Tho field was well bunched at tho bell, but along the back Mussen broke clear of tho field, and went on to win by eight lengths; half a length between second and third. Isaacs 3 Fogarty came down as hs was being pushed off, and did not compete further, Farmer was in a good position entering the straight, and sprinting strongly won by two lengths; a length between second and third. Time, 32 4-TWO-MILE A GRADE LAP RACE. A. L. Rosonbrock (20 points) ... 1. AV. J. Templeton (15 points) ... 2 P. Traill (10 points) 3 Eight competitors. In this event 15 points went to the winner of the race proper, and tho first man at the end of each lap, except the first, scored 5 points. Eosenbrock rode well, and finished strongly np the straight to win comfortably.
NOVELTY RELAY HANDICAP (lady 100yds, man 220yds, and cyclist 592yds). Miss M'Larcu, B. G. AVallcr, and E. D. Palmer, 25yds 1 'Seven teams competed. Tho lady in tho winning team collected a handsome box of chocolates. This was an amusing event, most of the runners finishing in a bunch. Palmer rodo well,.and finished with syds, to spare. TWO-MILE B GRADE HANDICAP. First heat: A. Harris (50yds) 1, G. Smith (15yds) 2, J. Campbell (scr) 3. Six starters. AVon by six lengths; a , length between second and third. Taylor ... 1 G. Smith ... ... 2 P. Fraser 3 Smith rodo well from a back mark, tho field being well bunched at the bell. Taylor drew away along the back, and though Smith challenged Taylor hung on to his advantage and won by a length; a length between second and third.° Time, smin 47 4-ssec. Ho maintained his advantage, and won by four lengths; a wheel between second and third. Time, 4min 14 2-sscc. THREE-MILE CYCLING CLUB HANDICAP. S. Bremford (50yds) 1 A. L. Eosenbrock' (50yds) 2 C. Lucas (70yds) 3 Twelve starters. This was a close race, but the time was not very fast. Fogarty (scr) managed to get up among tho bunch, but he had nothing in reserve when Bremford unloosed a sprint up the straight to win by half a length from Eosenbrock, Lucas being several lengths away third. Fogarty, after riding a good race, tailed to finish. Time, Smin 14 l-ssec. Boy Scouts’ Half-mile.—J. D. Donaldson 1. TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS 100 YARDS A GRADE HANDICAP. B. Drumm (syds) 1 H. H. Nichol 1 Miss At, Dawson ... 2 Miss J, AVelsh ... 3 Miss Nichol gut off Hie mark smartly, and was soon into her stride, finishing strongly to win by Byds, a yard between second and third. A splendid finish, Ralston winning by inches, inches between second and third. The whole field was separated hy less than a yard. Time, It 2-ssec. Second heat: C. J. >S. Thompson (scr) and J. M'Cra© (7yds) dead heat 1, F. G. Andrews (3yds) 3. Nine starters. Another exciting race. Thompson got up in the last few yards to divide first place with M‘Rae, Andrews being a yard back third. Burridge 3 A splendid race, Thompson again getting np over the closing stages to share first place with Farr Burridge a foot back third. Time, 11 2-sscc. ONE-MILE AVALK HANDICAP. C. J. Henry (200yds) 1 R. H. Cabot (100yds) 2 G. S. Cabot (serf 3 Four starters. Henry and C. E. Birt (220yds) were together all the way, and finished practically m a line. Birt, however, was disqualified. R. H. Cabot was 50yds back, and G. S. Cabot, who did not walk as freely as usual, was another 30yds back third. Time, 6min 55sec, 440 YARDS HANDICAP. F, C. Andrews (35yds) ... 1 R. Wahrlich (45yds) ... ... ... 2 C. Young (3oyds) and C. S. Thompson (10yds) dead heat 3 Fifteen starters. AVnhrlich Jed for tho greater part of the journey, hut Andrews put in a. fast run at the furlong mark, ami drew level with AVahrliclf entering the straight. AVahrlich hung on to Andrews, however, the latter winning in a fine finish by barely a foot. Thompson, who was virtual scratch, put in a late run and defeated Young for third place. Time, 521-sscc. E- Fish (100yds) 1 C. Pope (210yds) 2 T. L. Chettlcburgh (160yds) 3 Fourteen starters. M'Lachlan, the scratch man, found the handicaps too much, and withdrew during the last lap. Fish ran a ."sound race, and did well to get up, Pope setting a fast pace from the start. With two laps to go. Pope was still out in front, but Fish was in a good position about 25yds back. Fish improved his position in the nest lap. and at the bell was only a few yards behind Pope. Fish entered a spirited challenge at the furlong mark, and,., lengthening
