NOTES OH THE EVENTS [By St. Claib.,] The weather, was again line at Oamaru when tho Summer Aleeilng was concluded before a very disappointing attendance. Slight; rain over night had not affected the course, and it was both fast and hard. Tho Oamaru Cup promised to produce the best race at “the meeting, but Gay Sonnet was allowed to make her own pace all the way, and I lie other riders, who expected her to drop back to them, made the mistake of not going up to her, and under tho favourable circumstances she stayed on to win nicely. Air AVilliam Gardincr; president of the club, watched the racing from a motor car in tho birdcage, and his many friends were pleased to see him about again after his long illness. Ho presented the handsome silver cup which went with the stakes for the principal race to Air E. T. Buchanan, who suitably responded. Air APlvor’s starting, with an improvised barrier, was again satisfactory. The totalisator investments only amounted to £8,519, as against £11,522) on the second day last year, and tho total for the meeting was £15,220, or a decrease of £5,516) on the amount handled when this meeting was held at AVingatui last December. * * * * Carinthia knocked himself badly in the first day’s hurdle race, and was withdrawn, leaving only four starters in the Pacific Hurdles, and the previous day’s winner, Rangatahi, who was risen 121 b in weight, was sent out a warm favourite, with surprisingly good support for Gayoma. The latter and Panther ran out in front together for six furlongs, tho favourite putting iu a couple of bad jumps. Then Gayoma took charge, but rounding the far turn Rangatahi ran past tho field, and, leading Shandro over the last fence, beat him home comfortably by a length and a-half. Gayoma was four lengths further back third. Investments, £3Bl-). * * * * The field in tho Novice Stakes was reduced to eight by the scratching of All Smiles, Captivate, Louise, Aladame, Jovbridgo, Rosewood, Aliss Thespian, and AVigwag, and, with Emerson up, Filosol was made a better favourite than Waving Corn or Aliss Alarco, only these three being well backed. From a good start, Colonel Quex, on the rails, jumped out smartest, and was followed by Waving Corn and AVin Abbey along the back. At tho far turn AVaving Corn wont to the front, and was followed Alls* Alarco, and the favourite, who into the straight, by Colonel Quex, we* carried out wide by Aliss Alarco. AVaving'Corn ran home an qasy. winner by a length and a-half from Filosol, who just beat Colonel Quex by a neck for second money. Aliss Alarco was fourth, and Barrington, who was slow to move over the first furlong, next. Investments, £769.). * * * * The full list of acceptors went to the post for the Oamaru Cup, and, despite Ida poor showing in the nine-furlong ra «# on Friday, the Southlands, Bilbo, wt» ’ installed favourite, with Rotor, "who looked bigger than usual, a good second choice, and Royal baxon .and Lucy Locket next- fancied. The start was not a- good one, Sarnia getchoaned' out. and Gaf Son-

net tho best of it. The latter led out of the straight from Royal Saxon and Lucy Locket, and, turning into tho hack stretch Gay Sonnet was clear from Royal Saxon, Rotor, and Lucy Locket, About the five furlong post Royal Saxon first and then Bilbo got knocked hack, the latter badly,, and Sarnia moved up on the outside from last place. Gay Sonnet was still in charge rounding tho top, with Sarnia, Vaward, and Rotor next. Royal Saxon and Lucy Locket being well back. Gay Sonnet led into the straight from Sarnia, Vaward, and Rotor, and, after shaking off Sarnia, went on to win easily by a length and a-half from Royal Saxon, who finished very fast and beat Rotor by a head for second money. Sarnia was another head away fourth, and then came Vaward and Lucy Locket. After her winning form the first day, Gay Sonnet was allowed to pay quite a false price. The race appeared to bo very .roughly ridden, and Royal Saxon, Lucy Locket, and Bilbo each met with trouble. Investments. £1,218.

All started in the Weston Harness Trot, and most of the pool was invested. on Ilona Bingen and Return Voyage, the former being slightly the better backed, with Erin's Chance and Le Thorpe tho best supported of the others. Tho favourite refused to leave her mark and took no pait in the race. Return Voyage, Onoto, and John Appear went away the best of tho limit horses, and led Lo Thorpe out of the •straight. Going to the back stretch Lo Thorpe passed John Appear, and at tho live furlong post ran into second place to Return Voyage. 'These two led into the straight where Return A’oyagu drew away and won by two lengths from the ’fast-finishing Erin’s Chance, who, was six lengths in front of Onoto, with Wild Nita and John Appear next. Investments, £1,2C6. » * » * ’The withdrawal of Tripaway from the Stewards’ Handicap left a, oue-divi-dend field, and the leniently-treated First Raid was sent out favourite, with Alartis and Royal Tractor next fancied. Eaton Bells, Aloncy Aline, and the favourite. The latter, on the outside, at once took charge and ran abreast to the straight, where First Raid drew out. His rider leo Alartis up on the inside, and nearly threw the race away, by taking it too easily, and only beat Alartis by half a head. Aloncy Mine was three lengths away third and Eaton Bells next. Royal Tractor stumbled near the distance post and nearly fell. Investments, £B7l. * # * # Royal Saxon was withdrawn from the Farewell Handicap, and Arrowy was sent out better backed than Canutader, with Tripaway and Gold Brick each well fancied. Camisader lost several lengths at the start, from which Gold Brick led out, with Aloney Peer and Arrowy next, Camisader tailing off a strung-out field. There was no change until racing round the home turn, wliero Arrowy moved up into second place, and tho rider on Camisader attempted to get through on the rails and was blocked. Gold Brick lasted long enough to beat Arrowy by half a length, and Camisader, who finished well, was a length off third. Taboo and Money Peer were next. Camisader was unlucky to lose, ana was ridden with_ bad judgment. Investments, £1,053). * ■* * * A field of sixteen went to the post for tho Pukeuri Saddle Trot, and the Dunedin-trained Doncliff was made a gcod deal better favourite than tho coupled pair (Dillon Blake and Logan Biac), with Cytheria and Bingen Patch next iu demand, Cytheria lost her chance at the start, and Dillon Blako wont out very smartly, and quickly established a big lead from Rodger Lyon, tho field being well strung out. After passing tho five furlong post Dillon Blake broke badly, and Belle Embrace, Rodger Lyon, and Bingen Patch then took up the run-, ning. Bello Embrace led into the straight just in front of Roger Lyon and Bingen Patch. The latter took charge before reaching the outer stand and won easily by four lengths from Rodger Dillon, who beat Bello Embrace by two lengths for second money. Doncliff was close up fourth. An inquiry was held into the performance of the winner as compared with his first day’s race, but no action was taken 'investments. £1,120. Free Pointer stumbled near th© fai turn and his rider, F. D. Henderson, sustained a broken arm. * # * * The withdrawals from the Windsor Handicap, which the stewards altered in make it the last race instead of the Farewell Handicap, were Camisader, Arrowy, Waving Corn, and Filosol, and Aleadow Lark was sent out a slightly belter favourite than Red Sea, with tho North Islander, Silver Tray, also well backed. The favourite was slow to jump out, and Singjr, Silver Tray, and 'Killorna took up the running. Singer led this pair into the straight, but at the distance post Silver Tray and Killorna passed him In the run ti the post Killorna just headed the North Island mare and beat her by a neacl. Singer was two and a-half lengths further back third, and the favourite a bad fourth, just in front of Red Sea. Investments, £1,414).

NEW BRIGHTON TROTS FIRPO WINS CHIEF EVENT The totalisator investments for the first day were £20,499. FREE ADVICE CASE F. G. HOLMES DISQUALIFIED [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 16. At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Saturday night a further development took place in the Laplander-Free Advice case, and'the well-known driver, F. G. Holmes, was disqualified for three months. It will be remembered that at the Otahuhu meeting on November 17 Laplander (F. G. Holmes) and Free Advice (J. Bryce) finished first and second. The stewards, after an inquiry, reversed the judge’s placings, and Holmes was cautioned. The owner ol Laplander, Mr C. Nordquist, appealed to the Trotting Association. On Saturday Mr Nordquist appeared before the association in support of his appeal. The association decided to write to the Otahuhu Club and ascertain whether Mr Nordquist had been invited to be present at the inquiry, and if not to reopen the inquiry. The association also decided, as stated above, to impose a penalty of three months’ disqualification on F. G. Holmes. CANTERBURY NOTES [Special to the ‘ Star.'] CHRISTCHURCH. Dcccmlipr 15. T. H. Gillett will leave early next week for Auckland with Count Cavour, Amor, and Wliarncliffc, They have done exceptionally well lately, and they look a useful lot for the Ellershe Meeting. Count Cavour will strip a much improved horse compared with what he had shown in his earlier races this season. Amor is better now than at any previous stage of his career, Wharncliffo has come on a lot lately, and he should play his part well in the hurdle races on the trip. J. M'Combs has Crown Area, Moorgas, and Court Jester looking in good health, and ho will take the trio north early next week. Crown Area and Moorgas have done well since they came to Riccarton, while Court Jester lias started to give evidence of developing into a useful horse. ]>. V. Mason will leave on Tuesday night for Auckland with Philippic, Golden Armour, and the two-year-old Honour, who will represent G. D. Greenwood at the- Auckland, Meeting. They have got through a lot of uscful 'work lately, and should bo ready to show their best form at the EHerslio carnival. Each of the trio, in fact, looks a likely winner on, the trip. First Sight has been causing F. D. Jones some anxiety, having shown signs of soreness more than once since he raced at South Canterbury. The trouble does not appear to bo serious, however, and the Gay Lad gelding is working along in good style. He will not fulfil his Auckland engagements, bub if he continues to. train on all rio’ht Jones will take him to the Manawatu and Marton Meetings with Toawai and Belcairo as mates. This looks a very useful team, likely to earn some money. ■ v . , , . F. Christmas will make the trip to Auckland with Red Heckle and Zeuxis. Thev have been given plenty of useful work lately, and are in excellent fettle. It is probable that D. Campbell will race Battle Colours on the southern circuit during the holiday‘season.
