TIMARU WOOL SALES
SO PER CENT. OF CATALOGUE QUITTED [Per United Press Association.] TIMARU, December 17. A full and representative bench of buyers faced the rostrum in the Theatre Royal to-day for the opening wool sale of tho season in Timaru. A total of 11,984 bales were submitted, an increase of 2,137 bales on tho offering at tho first sale last season. The wool came forward in fairly good order, but, as the result of the unfavourable weather experienced during the spring, tho standard of selection was not up to that of the first sale kyA year. A number of the clips were bright and well grown, but hogget wool generally showed signs of tenderness. In many cases valuations were a fraction more than buyers were prepared to offer, but nevertheless about 90 per cent, of the total offering was cleared. The Continent and Bradford were the principal operators, and bidding was fairly keen. The dominion mills purchased most of the top lots, showing a preference for good half-breds. Although prices were down ou those obtained jt the corresponding sale of last season, values were on a par with those at sales held recently at Christchurch. The range of prices was:— Merino. —Super., 18|d to 19-Jd; average, 17M to 18Jcl; inferior, 16d to 17d. Half-bred.—Super., 21d to 23 Jd; average, 19d to 20jd; inferior, 18d to 19d.
