The scores at Balmacewen on Saturday for the second round of the Bruntsfield Medal were much better than > the previous Saturday, five players breaking 80. As was anticipated, the result of the Bruntsfield Medal was very close, D. H. Butcher winning by one stroke from S C. Colbeck and J. Spence, with E. A Reed another stroke worse. Butcher and Colbeck both took 81 for the first round, and on Saturday Butcher did a 76 and Colbeck 77. It was J. Spence, however, who provided the best score of the competition, following up an indifferent 85 in the first round by a brilliant 73. Spence started off badly with a 6 for the first hole, but then settled down to do sensational figures for the next eight holes to finish the half in 35. Coming home, he continued to play excellently, doing the nine holes in 38, the same as the scratch score for the course. With his allowance of five strokes, Spence’s net score of 68 won him the handicap event with a couple of strokes’ margin. In the play-off between J. R. Laidlaw and G. Gibson for the handicap match, in which they had tied on the previous Saturday, the latter was successful. A medal handicap was played on the Corstorphine Links last Saturday, conditions being excellent. Some good cards were returned, A. Lang (9) and J. Hart (15) tieing, with net scores of 70. They were closely followed by A. Sincock (14), with a not 71, while three players—J. H. Robertson (18), J. A. Secular (12), and W. Wrather (12) — bad net 72’s. In the play-off between Lang and Hart, the former was successful. To-morrow an interclub match is to be played between the Otago and the St. Clair Clubs on the Corstorphine Links. A medal match was played by the Otago Ladies’ Club last Friday, and resulted in unusually close scoring, no fewer than three players tieing in both the A grade and tho B grade events. The scores in the A grade match were very good, Miss C. Williams (17), Miss Young (20), and Miss O. Stevens (8) all returning cards of 74 not. Mrs J. A. Cook was only one stroke worse, showing a welcome return to form with a fmo score of 81, which her allowance of 6 made 75 net. The scores in the B grade event wore not nearly so good, Miss Fynmore (21), Mrs Haggitt (30), and Miss Hart (21) tieing, with 82 net. The ties are to he played off to-day. The Otago Ladies’ Club was to have played its last match of the season on Tuesday, but the heavy rain caused a postponement until to-day.
