CROWELL NOTES
[From Our Correspondent.]
The weather bo far this season has ; not been settled After a wet spring the closing weeks of November and early in Oeomber brought a warm spell. Another change came early this week to wintry conditions. A cold storm raged on Tuesday, with light 1 snow on the mountains. Thioughout' Tuesday night the rain was continuous, but. it cleared on Wednesday morning. Later in the day, however, ! cold squalls and rain were experienced. For midsummer the weather is unusually wintry. Haymaking and shearing have boon in full swing, but the wet weather will ; delay work, particularly with those i innholders who have little accommodation for holding sheep under cover. Fruitgroweis report favourable pros-. poets for tbe season. The stone fruit I crop will soon bo going forward, and; one local grower, who is generally first in the market, hopes to market a con- , signment next week._ Educational facilities are being, steadily extended in the town. At | the Cromwell _ District High School 1 good progress is being made with the erection of two additional rooms How- , ever, with these completed the aceom- j modation will still be inadequate. Two ■ additional subjects—cookery and wood-1 work—have recently been granted by j the department, and to provide for . these the Oddfellows’ Hall and the ( Presbyterian Hall have both been | leased. They are sitaatai some dis- - tance from the main school. The United Ministry has been very : favourably received in these parts, i Upper Clutha residents especially wcl- j come the appointment of Mr Taverner I as Minister of Railways. There is some | reason for it. as is he not a keen | member of the Expansion League, a body which has so consistently favoured the work? Then again, bir Joseph Ward has professed u vigorous railway policy
