LOCAL AND GENERAL

The first meeting of the new council of ’the British (U.K.) Manufacturers’ Association of New Zealand was held on Monday last, when there were present:—Messrs C. Sara, L. Ashcroft Edwards, C. W. Salmon, H. A. Goodwin, R. J. Aekins, J. Matthews, D. Hogg, G. ii. Scott, J. R. Cole, C. E. Blayney, C. W. Budd, and H. S. Hart. The first business of the meeting was the election of a president and two vice-presi-dents. Mr Salmon proposed the recJection of the retiring president, Mr G. Sara, which was seconded by Mr Edwards. Mr Sara, however, explained that as ho was leaving this month for the Old Country, and as the duration of his stay there would probably not permit him doing much in the interests of the association, he would have to decline nomination. After several speakers had urged Mr Sara to continue in office ho eventually agreed, and was unanimously reelected. Messrs C. W. Salmon and L. Ashcroftt Edwards were re-elected vicepresidents. Among matters dealt witli by the meeting was a question of an Empire Shopping Week in 1929, and it was resolved that the January meeting of the council take steps to commence the necessary arrangements. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of the Leith, A.0.F., was held on Wednesday last, when tljere was a good gathering of members present. Official visits were received from Courts Pride of Green Island and Queen of Green Island. P.C.TI. Bro. J. Benfell, on behalf of the court, presented to P.C.R. Bro. C. S. Hawes the prize won in a recent competition, and the recipient returned thanks. A handsome donation was granted to the juvenile branch, Court Pride of the Valley, for a Christmas treat for the youthful members at their next meeting. The toast of “The Visitors was responded to by P.C.R.. Bro. R. Chalmers, on behalf of the Green Island Courts, Bro. Ivcrsen on behalf of Court Star of the Dunstan, Clyde, and Bro. H. Simpson on behalf of Court Waireka. New Plymouth, the second largest branch of the A .O.F. in the dominion. Following the close of the meeting, a “500 ” card tournament was held.
