Tho Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) was entertained last night by the United Party at dinner at tho Royal Oak Hotel, Wellington. The Minister of Railways (Mr W. B. Taverner) presided On Sir Joseph Ward’s right sat Mr A. E. Davy (organiser of the United Party), who was the recipient of a locket from the Auckland members. Tho Minister of Health (Mr A J. Stallworthy), who made tho presentation, also handed Mr Davy a well-filled wallet on behalf of the United members generally. At a meeting of directors of oho Dunedin Bowling Club reference was made to the death of Mr T. A. Maitland, and the following resolution was passed:—“The directors have learned with great regret of the death of Mr Maitland. Before his illness forced him to relinquish his active participation in the club’s games and affairs Mr Maitland was a very active member. He joined the club in 1905, became president in 1917, and continued Ids membership 'until last year. The club is greatly indebted to the deceased for his services, and the directors extend to his relatives their sincere sympathy in their great loss.” The Hon. W. B. Taverner will probably return to Dunedin from Wellington for the week-end.
Mr E. Page, S.M., will succeed Mr W. G. Riddell as senior magistrate at Wellington. Mr J. S Barton has been transferred from Wanganui to Wellington, and is to be succeeded at Wanganui by Mr J. H. Salmon, of Wellington. Mr T. B. M'Neil, barrister, of Hastings, has been appointed a magistrate at Wellington in u junior position. The deputy mayor ((Jr J. S. Douglas) referred at tho meeting of the City Council last night to the honour conferred upon the mayor (Hon. W. B. Taverner) by his receiving the important portfolio of Railways. Irrespective of their political beliefs, said Mr Douglas, they ould offer_ their heartiest congratufatious to Mr Taverner. While they knew he would fill the position with credit, they recognised that a compliment has been paid to Dunedin. A high honour ’.ad also been conferred on tho Hon. T. K. Sicley in his appointment as AttorneyGeneral and as Leader of the Upper House. The deputy mayor went on to say that ho had forwarded telegrams of congratulations to Messrs Sidey and Taverner, and also to Sir Joseph Ward on his assumption to the office of Prime Minister. Mr C. B. Tapley, ol Invercargill, came up by the express this morning and wont on for Christchurch,
Mr VV, E. C. Reid, called to Christchurch on business, travelled by tho 11,34 train to-day. Mr T. C. Harrison went to Palmerston by train this morning. Dr Roberts left by the 11.34 train to-day for Waimato. Mr W. Hopkins, a director in Marshall’s Proprietary, went north this morning, en route for Melbourne. Mr T. M. Ball came from the north this week and has taken over from Mr F. S. Dyson the position of District Engineer of the Public Works Department. Mr Dyson leaves for Auckland to-morrow, and will spend a day or two in Wellington on the way. Promotion to the Auckland district has come to Mr Dyson after only ten months’ duty here. In that short time, however,_ he has earned tho respect of all with whom he has come into contact, professionally or privately, and in Otago as well as in other places wherein lie has been stationed there will bo sincere wishes for his happiness in his new sphere. Constable M. L. E. Fiiagibbon, at present stationed at Dunedin, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington, and will probably leave next week to take up his new duties. His position here will be taken by Constable E. W. Simpson, of Wellington. Among the visitors to the Grand Hotel are Mr Wallace Smith (Sydney), Mr W. M. A. Kissling (Auckland), Mr and Mrs W. Morton, Mr H. E. G. Thompson (Wellington), Messrs J. Anderson and B. T. Ringer (Christchurch) . New guests at tho Excelsior Hotel include Messrs G. J. Vaughan and E. Brennan (Sydney), Mr R. W. Parsons (Auckland). Messrs Anderson and J. Allan M'Vicar (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Drummond, Messrs John Dench, F. V. Turner, and J. Garton Christchurch), Mr A. H. Richards (Timaru), Mr and Mrs Naish (Balelutha). Latest arrivals at the City Hotel include Mr J. 'Williams (Wellington), Mr and Mrs J, Robertson (Timaru), Mr and Mrs R. A M'Dougall (Oamaru), Mr and Mrs G. R. Young (Wilder!), Mr R. Jenkins (Invercargill).
