Replying to a deputation, the Minister of Lands (Mr A. D. M’Lcocl) foreshadowed legislation enabling the Government to sell many small reserves taken from subdivisions of land, the money to be used for helping the, larger domains.
Probate of the will of Mr Charles Cookman MacMillan, of Remuera, who died on February IU, has been granted (states an Auckland Press Association message). The estate is sworn at approximately £2OO,DUD. With the exception of an annuity to an employee, the whole of the estate goes to his widow and children.
An application to interpret the .shearers’ award in regard to the wages of cooks was made before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., by the East Coast Shearers’ Union in an action against William Douglas Lysnar, M.P.. at Gisborne. The facts wore not in dispute. Lysnar for twenty years had employed only one cook for shearers. This year two cooks appeared on the scene, and Lysnar offered one woman £4 a week. This was refused. _ There were only eight shearers working at the time, and it was contended that it was absurd to say that one cook could not cook for more than twelve men. The magistrate hold that more than £4 a week should have been paid, but ns the union had I ailed to carry out the preliminaries the information would be dismissed.
The meeting of the Rescue Lodge, No. JUS, International Order ol Good Templars, was held on Tuesday in the Oddfellows’ Hall, King Edward street, when Pro. D. Holland (Chief Templar) presided. The largo number present showed that considerable interest is being taken in the work of the lodge and order. One candidate was initiated, and a large amount of business dealt with. The election of representatives to Grand Lodge, which meets in Wellington at Easter, resulted in Uro. S. J. Sell being elected regular representative and Sister Violet Dray alternate representative. Bro. Hilton was elected to represent the Star of the South Juvenile Temple, Sister Mrs Duncan being the alternate representative. Arrangements for the lodge picnic, to bo held at Tomahawk on Saturday afternoon, were completed. The Star of the South Juvenile Temple met the same evening, Bro- J. Hilton, S.J.W., in charge. The attendance was good, and members rendered several items.
