The Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Contes) and Mrs Coates, Mr K. S. Williams (Minister ol : Public Works) and Mrs Williams, and Mr A. I). AULcod (Minister of Lands) arrived by the express from the north this afternoon. Mr Geoffrey Curtis, sub-editor of the ‘ Sun,’ Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs Curtis, is on a visit to Dunedin, before returning homo after a holiday at Stewart Island. John Purvis, aged sixteen, employed in the sales department of W. D. and H. 0. Wills (N.Z.), Ltd., who resides at Trentham, was on Monday presented with a gold watch from the directors of W. D. and H. 0. Wills, Ltd., in recognition of his courageous act on the day of the firm’s annual picnic, three weeks ago, at Upper Hutt. Purvis, at great risk to himself, dived into the Hutt River at Maori Bank, and saved the life of a young woman employed by tli© firm, who had sunk in one in one of the deep holes at that part of the river, and had been caught on a snag. Purvis is a native of Dunedin and an ex-scholar of the High Street School. Tombs, second son of the late Mr George Tombs, of the firm of Messrs Whitcombo and Tombs, Ltd., died in Australia recently, leaving a widow, a son, and a daughter. _He was an architect, working chiefly m Melbourne, but retired from business some years ago as a result of a stroke. Andrews, owner and skipper of the Sanders Cup winner Betty, left Dunedin this morning for Christchurch. „ „ A very pleasant function took place at the Morav Place School this morning, when Mr Wallace, chairman of the Education Board, together with members of the committee, mace a presentation to Master Reg. Geddes, who successfully upheld the honoi ot the Moray Place School and Otago m recent swimming contests. Mr Wallace referred at length to the splendid performances attained by tnis lad ouriim the past twelve months m securing no" less than eight championships. This, ho stated, was a most remarkable record, and one to bo proud of. Mr Wallace then presented the lad with two silver medals for the 33J and 50yds primary school championships, and also a gold medal presented anonymously by an admirer.. Master Geddes during the year won Otago boys championships of 50, 75, 100, and 150yds; also the junior boys’ breast stroke championship of Now Zealand. In addition to this, he won last Tuesday evening the Kiwi Club championship cup, covering all distances. Mr Wallace, in making this presentation, gave some thorough and sound advice to all the children assembled. A very pleasing function was concluded with three hearty cheers for Master Geddes. Before the Police Court adjourned this morning the magistrate (Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) expressed his regret that the day’s sitting was the last to be attended by Mr G. A. Wycherley, who for many years past had been a member of the ‘ Evening Star s ’ reporting stub. Mr Bundle wished Mi Wycherley every success in his new sphere of action. Senior-sergeant Qnartcrmain, speaking on behalf of the police, paid a tribute to Mr Wycherley’s unfailing courtesy to the department. Mr 'Wycherley briefly returned thanks.
