ELDORADO OF DIAMONDS
DISCOVERY IN SOUTH AFRICA GOVERNMENT ACQUIRES CLAIMS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, CAPE TOWN, March 1. (Received March 2, at 11.40 a.m.) A casual inquiry in Parliament regarding tho expenditure of £2,500 elicited from tho Minister of Mines tho information that it hud been devoted to the making of a road fromNamaqual and to Alexander Bay, which lie described as an Eldorado of diamonds a foot below the surface. After a native had scraped the surface from a small area tho Minister reckoned up that diamonds worth £6OO had been taken within an hour. Ho disclosed that tho Government had made arrangements with the discoverer to stop working, and tho Government had acquired 30,000 claims. It was proposed to start a State mine.
