RECORD POSSIBILITIES.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING [Special to the ‘Stab.’] AUCKLAND, March 1. There was keen disappointment when it was made known at a late hour on Saturday that the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club had postponed its jubilee sports meeting. A large number of competitors and spectators assembled at the domain, fully expecting the meeting to be held. However, the track conditions were considered anything but favorable to the competitors, and the meeting was not proceeded with. An hour later the ground was in good order, so that the club’s officials were a little hasty, perhaps, in making a decision, as a late start would not have caused any inconvenience, and full advantage of the daylight saving could have been obtained. The meeting next Saturday, however, promises to provide some good racing, as the nominations constitute a record, and the best talent will bo competing. It is expected that F. Nesdalo will attempt to lower the existing New Zealand 440yds hurdles record of 56 4-ssec held by F. S. Ramson, Wellington. At the recent New Zealand and Australian championship meeting Nesdale deadheated for first place with Ransom, and Ids appearance on Saturday in lie hurdlcs handicap is sure to be one of the attractions of the carnival. The one-mile New Zealand record will probably claim the attention of J. W. Savidan, who will be set an almost impossible effort to reduce R. A. Rose’s record of 4min 13 3-ssec, which time he recorded at Masterton when he defeated Lloyd Hahn. The Domain track has never been considered suitable for a record-breaking mile, and if Savidan can win in 4min 20sec he will record thb' best performance of his career; in fact, it would be the fastest mile ever run at the Domain. Savidan’s best time for the distance is 4min 25 4-sscc, recorded when lie won the one-mile championship of New Zealand at Auckland in 1927. _ . . Considerable interest will be taken in the 440yds handicap, which race usually 1 decides "the winner of the points trophy 'for flat events. At the evening meeting held last week T. E. Henry gave A. J. Elliott 10yds and a beating. On this occasion, however, Elliott is called upon to give Henry Iyd, and it will need to be a complete reversal of form for Elliott to have a chance of finishing in front of Henry. Savidan is also engaged in the quarter, and he should go close to winning, provided his earlier efforts have not had any serious effect on him.
