RESCUES ITS MATE. An interesting and probably unique story of a dumb animal’s courage and devotion to another of its kind is (old in a despatch to the Toronto 'Globe' from the flooded area of Vermont (U.S.A.), An old black horse and a young grey horse wore caught, m the flood when flic Winooski River flowed over the Burlington farm of Willard Anns, owner of blond stock. Both started to swim. Watchers on higher ground saw them struggling to reach the shore. The old horse began to falter, slowed up, and finally started o sink. Tlio young horse, swimming beside him, paused, as if uncertain what lo do. Suddenly the black bead reappeared above Hie crest of the flood, and the old animal set his teeth in the young grey’s mane. WTth a mighty lug the young horse started again for the bank towing his exhausted companion. At last he reached shallow water, and human friends drew both animals ashore. Such heroism as this animal has shown could hardly be surpassed among human beings. The action of the horse should present a field for investigation to those scientists who endeavor to understand and interpret the psychology of emotion among animals. Ordinary folk, however, will bo content willi the explanation (hat "man’s best friend ” simply acted trim to the. instinct of Itis nature and lent hia aid lo a brother horse in distress.
