THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.
TO f’ 1115 EDITOU. Sir.—T claim to bo a patriotic citizen, but sometimes this spirit ot patriolism can go too far. For two weeks ! have attended the Octagon I’ictures; lor two weeks I liavo stood twice during each performance while the orchestra has played ‘ God Save the King.’ Now, sir, t am not a “Fed Fed"” but I. object. I can quite understand the National Anthem being played after the lilm ‘ Prince of ’Wales,’ or before the film ‘The Flag Lieutenant.’ 1 think that it was very appropriate. But when one has to stand in the middle of the performance because, the National Anthem is being played I object. As far as I can see, there is no special reason to play the anthem before the star film, unless it is to give Bicbard Hix a “boost.” ’I bo National Anthem, in my opinion, is a solemn performance, a hymn, not to bo played at any time unless it is needed. T uphold the anthem being played at the end of the performance, but in the middle—No. — 1. am, etc., February 29. Patriotic. A NURSE CAVELL BICT.I'BF. TO THE EDITOR. Sir —Placed in a prominent position in the Public Library is a painting depicting Nurse Cavcll going to her execution, while underneath arc the words: “The Foulest Crime m History.” Now, sir, I do not think that such words should be shown m a public place, as they tend to en-irc-nder an atmosphere ol resentment and ill-feeling. -By helping prisoners of war to escape, Nurse Cavell only incurred the penalty of martial law, although it is more revolting to shoot a woman than a man. So, sir, J dcsiic to see if those words could be deleted, as tlicii' presence is only harmful and ■embittering.—l am, etc., Hi xi n. February 29.
