HEW KING'S PRIZE WINNER I [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 29. The King’s Prize'lor 192 S has been lost and won. D. Hoots, Patea, who was successful with 519 last year, did not get into the second fifty. Alter a dull, cold morning there was a bright afternoon, with a front wind and changing light. When the first twentylive went down there was a large gallery, including the Minister of Defence (Mr F, J. ilolleston) and Colonel Burgess, representing General Young. Interest in this shoot centred in the highest score for the Rifle Cup. K. Lovell scored 47, and lat»r J. Carter equalled. In (he shoot-off Lovell won by a point. E. S. King (Wanganui) drew target No. 12, each shot being watched by a large crowd. His first sighter, a 2, was refused, but the second, a 4, was accepted.. His card rend 4550020544—40. James, who was a point behind, did not do so well,finishing with a card which read 4445355552—42, and as M'lver failed badly, registering four misses, King was champion, and was chaired off the range amidst the enthusiasm of his supporters. Last year Hoots made a similar, score to King in the final, beating Kcir (Ashburton) by 4 points. O’Donnell and Carter tied for third place, and the latter was beaten by a point. Though Pclone lias won the rifle club champion teams’ match lor the aggregate scores in belt matches, it is twentyjsix years since the club won this match. On that occasion the team consisted of A. Ballinger, W. Ballinger, W. Randall, C. Hate, and J. Wilson. To-day it was a ncck-and-neck struggle with Wanganui. A. M'lver was the last to shoot for Petone, 27 being required to win. His sixth shot just got on the target, but a 3 for the hist won the match.

Through some misunderstanding the North v.. South Island Match was not fired. At the conclusion of the shooting the prizes were presented by the Minister of Defence. King, who commenced shooting at Wanganui in 1911, lias attended a number of national meetings, and on the last five occasions has secured a place in the final fifty. In 1925, Caldwell's year, King finished third, and lie was nineteenth last year. He won the North island championship in 1912, and has held a number of provincial championships Captain M‘Leod (manager of the Australian team) expressed the opinion that there were not sufficient flags on the range to gauge the force and direction of the wind.
