NO INCREASED TAXATION

SYDNEY, February 29. (Received February 29, at 9.55 a.m.) The Assistant Treasurer (Mr Stevens) announced that there would bo no increase in taxation this year. The Government intends at the end or the present financial year that the deficit left by the Lang Government will be funded, which means that a loan will bo taken out to cover the deficit, the liability to be spread oyer a period of years, "it is intended in the new financial year to alter the incidence of taxation. Investigations are now being made in this direction. An effort will also be made by the Government to reduce expenditure and bring about economies, but not at the expense of efficiency. FIRE AT GILGANDRA. FIVE SHOPS DESTROYED. SYDNEY, February 29. (Received February 29, at 10.5 a.m.) Fire at Gilgandra destroyed five shops and their contents. The damage amounts to several thousand pounds.
