WEST COAST JUBILEE

RECORD CROWDS CELEBRATE

GREYMOUTH, February 26. Jubilee day drew a record crowd to the celebrations, which included an olficial luncheon at the Town Hall, which was attended by over 250 pioneers and visitors. Addresses were given by the Prime Minister (Mr J. G. Coates),, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr H. E. Holland), the mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade), Mr T. E. Y. Scddon, M.P., ami W. S. Glenn, M.P., Mr Card (Mayor of Featherston), Mr Alfred Russell (Waipukurau), Air Hosio, ami Mr J. Kerr (Pctonc), Mr Jesse Steer (chairman of flic Grey Harbor Board), and Commander do Salis (of H.M.S. Veronica). The speakers all paid groat tributes to the pioneers ot the West Coast,. Mr Coates referred to (be uilincnce of the West, Coasters in securing humanitarian legislation, to the need for timber conservation and coal development, and also for making the unique scenic attractions of Southern Vestland more accessible for oversea and dominion tourists. Mr Holland, responding to the toast to Parliament, pointed out that, it was a reflect, of the intelligence ot the community, and he compared the New Zealand Parliament favorably with any Parliament in the Empire, adding that every element in the life of the people had its political aspect. After the firing of the jubilee blast at the Colklen Quarry, a large procession passed through the town to Victoria Park, where there were many striking tableaux and other displays. Short addresses were given by the mayor and the Prime Minister, and these were followed by a massed display by the school children and poi dances‘by a party of over fifty Maoris from Canterbury. To-night there were swimming and sports carnivals.
