NORTH-EAST VALLEY PROGRESS LEAGUE

A well-attended public meeting of the North-east Valley Progress League was held in the North-east Valley School on Monday evening.

The chief matter under discussion was the rights and wrongs of the Citv Council in using for works at the south end of the city money which had been allocated for use in repairing Solwyn bridge.

Mr J. Rhodes gave a detailed account of what had passed when a deputation elected by the league had examined Lindsay's Creek and stated that the members wore unanimous in their condemnation of the use of the £I,OOO allocated by the City Council for repairs to Selwyn bridge, when a much smaller amount would suffice for the work. Other parts of the creek were in need of attention. This inspection resulted in a visit by the city engineer, the town clerk, and most of the City Council to the place, and their investigations ended in the withdrawal of the £I,OOO and the allocation of the sum of £llO.

The removal of the surplus money was the subject of some adverse comment, and several members of the league took the opportunity of giving voice to their feelings. Mr Anscll pointed out that while the members of the league were residents of the Valley, they were also citizens of Dunedin, and in that capacity they could see that it was better that the money withdrawn from the Valley should bo spent wisely at the south end than wasted in the Valley. He also reminded them that money had been promised for urgent work along the bank of the creek. A letter to the same effect was read from the chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, and the secretary pointed out that the league had not lost its standing either with the people of the Valley or the City Council by its attitude in the matter.

The question of the ward system of electing councillor’s was also discussed. The league appointed two delegates 1,0 the meeting of the Dunedin Itatepayors’ Association, ami instructed them to support the system, holding that a reversion to the ward system would bo beneficial.
