FIGHTING AEROPLANE

HEW MACHINE FOR HEW ZEALAHD

" SPEED TO BURN "

[Special to the ' Stab.’]

CHRISTCHURCH. February 28

Of somewhat squab construction, hut showing very speedy lines, the GlosterGrebe single seater fighter, a new addition to the Mow Zealand Air Force, is being assembler! at Wigram Aerodrome, and in about seven days it. will probably be seen flying over Christchurch.

To outward appearances it is only half the size of the big Bristol fighters used for training purposes, but it has “speed to bum.” Of the latest Royal Air Force service machine type, the Gloster-Grebe can develop 152 miles an hour at a height of 10,000 ft. At sea level the machine can travel 160 miles an .hour. Two Vickers machine guns poke through the cowling as part of the equipment. The guns are worked automatically from the propeller, which presses two cams on each revolution to send the bullets away. The petrol tanks are carried in compact containers in the wings of the machine.
