RETURNED SOLDIERS’ AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The Executive Committee of the Dunedin Returned (Soldiers’ Association met last night, those present being Messrs A. C. Laing (president, in the chair), A. J. Gordon, J. Skinner, R. Holt, A. M'Hutchon, A. G. Leeden, P. 8. Anderson, D. Waddell, W. F. Forrester, and E. J. Anderson. WAIKOUAITI MEMORIAL. The President reported that he had attended the unveiling of the fallen soldiers’ memorial at Waikouaiti, and said he appreciated the opportunity given him to speak. He mentioned that Sir James Allen had “put in a good ■word for the 11.5. A ” CONDOLENCE.

Tt was decided to place on record the committee’s deep sense of appreciation of the persona] work done in the interests of returned soldiers, their dependents, and dependents of fallen soldiers hy the late Mr C. Speight and Mr R. W. Glendinning, and to extend heartfelt sympathy with the relatives in their bereavement. UNEMPLOYMENT.

The Unemployment Committee reported that it had been decided to apply to the local Patriotic Society for a grant of £IOO from the war funds account. It was also decided to communicate with the president of the St. Clair Improvement Society regarding any work which would bo suitable to returned soldiers, and to oiler a, subsidy in the. event of the association being allowed to nominate the men Jor any work to-he parried out.

The report was adopted. MEMBERSHIP.

Tho transfer of 2/1725 N. MTviulay to Levin was approved. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of 19809 A. P. J. Hayes, a member of the association who recently died. .. VISIT TO MATABAE.

Mr M'Hutchon reported that members of tho executive had visited the Mataraocamp at the invitation of Lieu-tenant-colonel H. E. Barrowclough, who, with his officers and all ranks, had extended all hospitality to them. They had had free access to all parts of the camp, and had enjoyed themselves greatly. Tho presentation of a shield by tho R.S.A. fo rsoction competition was greatly appreciated. It was decided to make the presentation of tho shield at a function to ho held at tho club.
