ST. HILDA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The St. Kilda Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the deputy-mayor (Cr Leary) occupying the chair. The_ following were also present:—Crs Fleming, Roy, M'Curdy, Gillam, Cosin Strattan, Beattie, Teller, and Longworth. Cr C. Conn commented on an account for £579 14s sd, which was passed for payment to the Dunedin City Council. This amount, he stated, was the final payment on the account due to the City Council for the electrification of the borough, and completely discharged the St. Hilda’s Council’s obligation in the matter.

It was reported that the water consumption for the fortnight ended yesterday was 4,376,000 gallons, at a cost of £lO9 12s. For the previous two weeks the cost was £ll6 16s 6d. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society wrote asking for the club’s cooperation in the construction of a direct railway line from the railway goods yards into Tahuna Park. Cr Longworth stated that so far as he could see the only stumbling block to the idea was the fact that in taking the railway line into Tahuna Park it would be necessary to cut into Culling Park. Now that the council had practically decided to do away with a dangerous corner of the park, however, this seemed an excellent opportunity of helping the society. He moved that a sub-committee bo set up to confer with members of the society, and inspect the proposed route of the line.

Cr Conn seconded the motion. Cr M'Curdy said that although he agreed that the council should co-oper-ate as far as possible with the society, he did not consider it advisable for any railway to go near a school. If the line were to be laid over the corner of Culling Park, as suggested by Cr Longworth, it must of necessity pass the gates of the Musselburgh School. The Deputy Mayor: The sub-commit-tee will no doubt consider this point.

The motion was carried, the sub-com-mittee to comprise the mayor (Mr R. W. Hall) and Crs Leary and Telfer.
