1D ORDER TO HOLD HIM

STRANGE MAINTENANCE CASE [Feb United Press Association.] WF.LId NGTON, February 27, Probably i lie smallest maintenance older over made against the father of an illegitimate child in any part of the F.nglisb speaking world was made by Air J. H. Salmon, S.M., in Die Magistrates’ Court to-day, when a young Greek named Maneholie Andanaris was ordered to pay a married woman named Daisy Monsct.yos tho sum of one penny per week for tho upkeep of hoi* child. It was slated in evidence that Hie mother, in ignorance of the law, had agreed to a lump sum of £6O being paid her in lieu of 15s a week maintenance secured in her by a previous court order. Site was afraid lie would leave the country, and at that, time she was about to marry her present husband. Air Salmon said bo did not think it was a lawful tiling for complainant to have been given the £6O, when she was acting in ignorance of the law. It wars not in the child's interest that slm should accept this small sum lor its future upkeep when tho lather would have had lo keep the child until it, was sixteen years of age. The £6O, however, which she had accepted would cover file 15s per week up till May, 1920. In the meantime there would be nothing to stop tho defendant leaving the country, ns the complainant’s acceptance of the money, in agreeing to settle the whole affair, had done away with the past order. However, so that Andanaris would not lie able to leave New Zealand, the court would now make an order.for one penny per week in the mother's favor. Although the order was for a very small amount it would stop the defendant from going out of the country. When the £6O had ail been used up by May of next year tho court would review the matter of future maintenance.
