KAIKORAJ VALLEY ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I noticed in a recent issue of your paper a letter signed “ Progress ” referring to the Kaikorai Valley road. As an old resident of the district I can safely endorse all that the writer has said. I may say that in the past the road was even much too narrow' jor horse traffic, hut since the introduction of the motor it has become positively dangerous in some places. It is only from 18ft to 20ft from kerb to kerb, and unless it is widened there is every likelihood of a smash up. Motor traffic on this road has considerably increased during the last few years owing to its being an easy route to the city. I have seen on three occasions an accident averted by a hair’s breadth. Once the two motors became locked; luckily no one was injured. This is our main thoroughfare, and yet it is simply alane, and an absolute disgrace to the place. Kaikorai, with its factories, etc., is a very important suburb, and something will have to be done to this road in the interests of the district. Now is the time to make it wider before other buildings go up and land becomes enhanced in value. Another matter I wish to draw the council’s attention to is a large culvert close to Ellis’s coal yard, which has been in a had condition for some time. It is what one would call a perfect mess-up and absolutely dangerous, especially for heavy traffic. I understand that faulty construction and recent temporary repairs are the cause of its being left in a very unsafe state. The road is becoming undermined, and there is a danger of some vehicle going through the crust, perhaps with serious consequences and probably damages from the corporation.—l am, etc., Protege.
