The first meeting for the year of the North-east Valley branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Institute on Thursday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members. Mrs Peat presided. and gave a very helpful and suitable address for the opening meeting. Two now members were welcomed from other unions—Mrs Hartleft from Westport Union, and Mrs Hancock from Hamilton, who brought a greeting from that union. Correspondence was read and received. Mrs Peat was chosen as delegate to conference to be held in Napier in March of this yeaj'. Mrs Filler, Mrs Anstice. Mrs Bartlett, Mrs Huberts, and Mrs Gibson were elected vice-presidents. The annual reports of the secretary, treasurer, and superintendent of the various departments were read and received, and these officers were duly re-elected. It was decided to have a freewill offering at the evening meeting to be held in the third week in May, in order to raise funds for the coming campaign, the duo date to be notified later. Arrangements for speakers will bo made. The Band of Hope essays were discussed. Votes of sympathy were passed to-the relatives of one of the members who had passed away during the year and to another member who had lost a son by death recently.
