GREY JUBILEE

ADDRESS BY PREMIER [Per United Press Association.] CimfiVMOUTH, February 2(3. The Prime Minister arrived yesterday to attend the Grey district jubilee celebrations, and to-day be addresstd a gathering of pioneers at the Old People’s Home on the occasion of a jubilee dinner at the home. Ho eulogised the wdrk of the first-corners to the West Coast, and said it was due to the solid, silent work of the pioneers generally that the dominion’s credit to-day stood as high as ever it stood.

Later tho Prime Minister attended the ceremony of placing at the gate of the cemetery a magnificent wreath in memory of the pioneers.

Special jubilee services were held in all the churches to-day. There were large congregations at the Anglican Church. Archdeacon York, of 131onlicim, formerly vicar of Mawhora, who preached, dealt interestingly with many phase's of the early history of the West Coast.

At St. Patrick’s Church Bishop Prodie, of Christchurch, celebrated Pontifical High Mass, and paid a, high tribute to the pioneers, referring specially to their sustained work for religion and humanity. At the Presbyterian Church the Rev. T. N. Cuttle spoke on the significance of the jubilee, and at the Methodist Church the Rev. G. Brown gave an appropriate sermon. The'main streets of the town are brilliantly festooned with bunting and colored electric lights, the effect being excellent. Large numbers of visitors from all parts of New Zealand and some from Australia, arc joining in the festivities.

A new cn-opcral ivc colliery, under the State Mines Department, which is to be opened on Tuesday, has been named the Jubilee Colliery, and a party of Navals has been invited to attend the function from TT.M.S. Veronica, which is visiting Ibis port for the jubilee celebrations. Her company, today attended the Anglican service, at which the Prime Minister was also present.

The main celebrations will commence on Tuesday.
