TELEPHONES ON APPROVAL
‘Telephones on Appioval 1 was the subject of a paper read at a meeting,of the Manchester District Federation of Trade and Traders’ Association? by,Mr T. Whittaker, of the Oldham and Ashton Chamber of Trade. Mr Whittaker said that resolutions by chambers of trade had been repeatedly passed asking for a reduction in the charges for telephones but. without result. The Nottingham Chamber of Commerce had passed a resolution suggesting that (he Government should adopt sonic bold policy with a view to popularising the telephone service by lowering (ho charges. He, however, offered a solution, and that w T as to increase the number of subscribers. The GoVernment should consider the question of installing telephones on approval, rent free, for twelve months. Ho believed a tremnedous number of firms and • persons would take advantage of that offer, and that it would be a sound business proposition. The Mayor of Bury (Cr S. H. Wilkinson) accorded the visitors a welcome to Bury.
