BANDS CONTEST

ST. HILDA'S PERFORMANCE

MUSIC MARKS HARD TO RECONCILE [Special to the ‘ Stak.'] CHRISTCHURCH, February 27. SC Kilda gained top place m the military section of the quickstep, but its chance to win was ruined by tho points allotted lor music. Tho baud, which was the first to appear, gave an attractive performance, and it is hard to reconcile tho small assessment of the judge, Mr Jackson. Tho band had a peculiar experience. It was placed last in the first test selection, first_ in tho hymn test, and last in the quickstep. Queen Alexandra’s Own. tho second to play the march, was awarded 91. but in drill was 10 behind St. Kilda. Tho gap in tho music seemed disproportionate, Woolston gave an excellent all-round exhibition and won deservedly. Kaikorai was well out in both sections, though the playing assessment of 70 is again hard to understand, especially as the band so pleased the judge in the selections and tho hymn. W. Conghlan (Kaikorai) put up a great performance of ‘ Lend Mo Your Aid ’ on tho E fiat bass in tho champion of champions solo in the evening, winning the gold medal donated by Messrs Chas. Begg and Co. IKie judge said it was one of the finest performances on the instrument he had ever heard. Goodall (Wellington Tramways) gave a splendid display in tho cornet championship. There is no doubt the ex-domifttoii and Australian champion still retains his old-time brilliance. The contest week was a great success. Tho weather was ideal throughout, and made it a financial success, J. Hunter (Dunedin), the well-known contest official, was tho quickstep referee.
