BEACH IMPROVEMENT

ST. HILDA COMMITTEE MEETS A meeting of the St, Kilda Bench Carnival Committee was lield at the Town Hall on Saturday night. Mr Christopher Conn presided, and forty men and women members of the committee were present. It was reported that Mr J. H. Hancock, chairman of tho Domain Board, had given the committee permission to use East Park, the flat area of land on the left-hand side of the road leading to the beach, for tpe purpose of the carnival. It was decided that the carnival should be held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 22, 23, and 24. Mrs Ashton, lessee of the refreshment house at the St. Kilda beach, offered to permit the committee to sell etc., on the three days named. The offer was accepted with thanks. It was decided to add Mr A. Smiley to the executive of the committee. The other members of the executive are:— Mr Christopher Conn (chairman), the mayor '(Mr R. W. Hall), and Messrs A. D. Edgar, Stratton, Thiele, M'Connell. and Crosby Smith. Mr J. W. Dove has been appointed secretary of the executive and the carnival.

Mr Conn reported having interviewed the St. Clair Carnival Committee, and that it had promised every assistance to the St. Kilda Committee, and had agreed to lend certain equipment.—The report was considered fo be very satisfactory.

Mr Thiele, on behalf of the Woolston Tanneries, promised a donation of sgs towards the funds of the carnival.—The donation was received with thanks. Mr Pitcher, perambulator manufacturer, Castle street, made a donation of a. perambulator as the first prize for the baby show.—The donation was received with thanks. A communication was receievd _ from the Commercial Travellers’ Association stating that it would be pleased to take part in the gala on the Friday and Saturdays nights.—The offer was received with thanks. Mr G. Stratton was appointed superintendent of the carnival. Messrs Cameron and Idour were appointed a'building committee. A ladies’ committee was set up, with Mrs J. A. Race as chairwoman.
