FRANCE V. AUSTRALIA MELBOURNE, February 24. In the singles C. Boussus (France) defeated I. MJnnoss, 6-4, 8-6. Playin the first sot was disappointing, both players being over-cautious. in the second sot there was bettor tennis. MTimos led 3-1, but Boussus’s service gradually gave him the advantage. In au exhibition mixed doubles J. Borotra (France) and Miss Boyd defeated ,1. Hawkos and Mrs O Hara Wood 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a match of sparkling tennis, Hnwkes playing grandly. Borotra's superb play dominated the last few games. WILDING SHIELD CANTERBURY BEATS WELLINGTON. Canterbury at Wellington yesterday regained the Wilding Shield from Welliiigtou, winning seven matches to five. On tho first day Canterbury led by live matches to one. Heavy rain overnight made tile courts sodden to-day, and play was only determined upon tho vote of the players. Ollivier did not try at all against Malffoy, who was playing well. Seay and Franco played a. brilliant game under the bad conditions. After losing the first set against Walker APGill led Walker 5-1 in tho second set, and had four set points—three of them in one game, but _ho could not win tho deciding point. Angus and Wilson played well. Wilson being the more forceful and accurate. Angus and Walker overwhelmed Wilson and M'Gill in the doubles, and Ollivier and Seay retinal against France and Malfioy, it being slated that Ollivier bad ricked his back. Tho detailed results are as follow, the Canterbury players being mentioned first —Singles,— G. Ollivier lost to C. E. Malfroy, 1-6, 3-6. 1. A. Seay lost to 1). G. Franco. 4-6, 4-6. O. Angus lost to N. R. C. Wilson. 6-2, 8-6, 4-6. —Doubles.— Ollivier and Seay lost to Franco and Malfroy, 6-3, 4-6 (retired). Angus and Walker beat Wilson and M’Gill, 6-3, 6-1. OTAGO V.
