NEW ZEALAND “BISLEY”

MEETING AT TRENTHAM THE SERVICE SERIES [Per United Press Association.] TRENTHAM, February 23. The service scries, which is regarded by iho older stylo of ‘‘bull’s-eye" men as an asterisked bugbear ipiiio out of keeping with their ideas of sober sport and entailing too inuch effort for comfort, was gut through by lunch time, but the, results were diiiloult to compile, owing to the prolonged absence of several batches of score cards, apparently through over-anxiety on the part of tho range officers to preserve their safe keeping. The weather during the morning was very line, though overcast, and at times the light was affected by drifting smoke from bush iiros. The shooting was not of a high standard, though some individual scores were fairly creditable. The Australians, besides hading the different ammunition somewhat of a handicap, were also troubled by the more strict observance of the "service’' conditions as applied here to “service" matches. They have been accustomed to tho use of slings and peep-sights, neither of which are permitted here, and in the absence of these aids their sores naturally sugered. They will probably make up a lot of leeway, however, when they get down to business in tho bolt (bull's-eye) series.

The afternoon was devoted to part of the Dominion Match, fifteen shots at ffUDyds (possible 75) being fired. There arc ten shots to bo tired at 900yds in this match, which docs not count for the champion belt. Tho competitors found shooting difficult on account of the changing light. 'There was a loft-fo-right breeze, which did not interfere with accuracy. A feature of this match was the score of 70 made by Q. Donald, of Featherston, the All Black footballer.

Captain R. Dl. Irvine (Nelson), who won the belt in I DUO, arrived in camp to-day, and will take part in the meeting. Another well-known King’s Prizeman arrived in camp tills morning in Colonel E. R. Smith, who wa”> successful in 1894. The executive decided to fire an additional match, to bo known us the Commonwealth and New Zealand Match. It will bo fired over four ranges—3o9yds, 6l)oyds, 800yds, and 900yds, teams of ten men, with a time limit.

F. J. Soler won the aggregate in the Service Championship by a margin of 30 points. Although he did not win a match in the series ho shot consistently, Ins lowest score being recorded in the moving target. Wanganui was successful in tho Teams’ Match, and is the winner of the Logan Campbell Shield and Islington Cup. It is tho fifth occasion Wanganui has won tlio trophy, which was won outright in 1924, and represented to tho association.

The conditions this evening give promise of bright weather, without wind, for to-morrow, when tho opening match at the 300, 500, and 600 yards will bo fired in the morning, and the second portion of the Dominion Match, ten shots at 900yds, and tho Marlborough Match, which is the first of tho bolt series, at 300 and 500 yards, in tho afternoon.

The Now Zealand team to lire for the Gordon Highlanders’ trophy will bo selected from tho following:—F. Solor, H. Simmonds, F. Jenne, H. Hunt, E Ballinger, W. Masefield, 11. Hester, G, Nix, F. Hood, and F. James. Eight men are required, the conditions being snap shooting targets, such as are used in the Australian military forces. H. Marshall will captain the team. Vic- ! toria and New South Wales will compete. The electric, light failed to-night, making tho working conditions almost impossible. 11. R. Hunt secured the highest score in tho 600 Yards Dominion Match with 7‘J. SERVICE SERIES. —No. 2 Match,— Snapshooting, disc target, 300, yds. (Possible 100.) 80s—-El, A.
