WILDING SHIELD [Peb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 23. To-day, on the association’s courts at Miramar, a Wellington team, weakened considerably by the withdrawal of A. L. France, met a strong Canterbury team in defence of the Wilding Memorial Shield, which Wellington narrowly won from Canterbury last season. Six matches were played, and Canterbury won five of them. The scries will bo concluded to-morrow. The two specially prepared courts were on the heavy side, having had an overdose of watering. The balls, too, quickly' became the color of the grass, while some of the players occasionally slipped and fell. The sky was overcast, but the courts were well sheltered from the northern wind. Tho following are the results, the Canterbury players being mentioned first:— SINGLES. C. Angas beat J. M'Gill, 6-3, C-I. K. J. Walker lost to N. 11. 0. Wilson, 2-6. 1-6. G. Ollivier beat 1). G. France, 6-2, 3-6. 6-3. 1. A. Seay boat C. E. Malfroy, i-o, 3-6, 6-3. DOUBLES. Angas and AValkcr beat France and Malfroy, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. Ollivier and Seay heat Wilson and M'Gill, 6-4, 6-4. OTAGO V. SOUTHLAND The annual representative lawn tennis match between Otago and Southland will be commenced to-morrow morning at tho Anderson’s Bay courts. The Southland team, which is a strong combination, will arrive by the express this evening. Tho following players will represent Otago;—Misses Pattison, White, Ramsay, Finch, Maloney, and Todd; Bray, Guy, M'Dougall (captain), Rawlinson, Jackson, and Bell.
