ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
LEG CRUSHED. David Russell, aged forty-eight, married, residing in the Octagon, and employed by Methvens, Ltd., was taken to the hospital at 3.30 yesterday a Iternoon suffering from an injured left log, which was crushed between two packing cases. FATAL ATTEMPT TO SWIM RIVER. A Hamilton Association message states that a drowning fatality occurred in the Waikato River at Huntly, when Lawrence Riddle, aged eighteen, was seized with cramp and disappeared while attempting to swim the river with a companion. Ho got into difficulties, and, despite his companion’s efforts to save him, sank. The body lias not been recovered. A FORTUNATE ESCAPE, Haslem Luff, a wagon driver, aged twenty-four, of Havelock, had a roj markable escape from death last evening. While on a shooting expedition at Pelorus Sound a .303 rifle loaded with an explosive bullet went off when be slipped. The bullet passed through the palm of his right hand, and ploughed a furrow up the side of his neck and face, clipping a piece out of his ear.—Blenheim Press Association telegram! FATAL COLLISION. A fatal collision occurred near Ashburet (Palmerston North) yesterday, the victim being Thomas Hooper Smith, a married man with three children. The deceased, who was a resident of Bulls, left Hastings early in the morning on a motor cycle, and when crossing through Ashhnrst district collided with a car which came suddenly out of a side road. He was conveyed to hospital, where an operation was performed, but deceased gradually sank and died. DEATH WHILE HARVESTING. James' Marsh, widower, aged fifty, dropped dead while harvesting on Air George Richardson’s farm at Arama.— Ashburton telegram.
