Professor G. E. Thompson left Bus morning for Christchurch to attend tho W.'Jj.A. conference.. .Mr L. J. Lynch, of Queenstown, spent yesterday in Dunedin, and went off Ibis morning as a delegate to the lire brigades conference at New Plymouth. Mr S. Gilchrist, well remembered in Dunedin ns a singer, but now settled in Christchurch, wont home to-day alter a lour of Olngo. Mr T. Dc Spong loaves Dunedin on Monday lo catch the Maunganui and proceed to Australia, there to .search for iheatrical costumes to replenish the stock that was diminished by Ihe tire in Stuart street last year. Later on Mr Do Spong will extend his search to London and Paris. Meantime he has arranged for (he carrying o' l ot ‘ U'° business in Dunedin, so that local producers of plays or operas will not be inconvenienced. Mr R. ML Hall, the Mayor of St. Kilda, left (his morning by the lirst express to attend the Grevinuuth jubilee. The Chcniiavski Brothers put in their spare night with a concert at Invercargill last night, and returned by the express this morning. Lieutenant L. A. Austen and twenty-four members of the Band of the Ist Battalion left for camp this morning. Mr C. W. Poslgatc, of Christchurch, has been appointed physical director of the Y.M.C.A., in succession to Mr J. V. Hanna. Mr Postgalc has had considerable experience in physical culture instruction both in the dominion and in America, where ho was on the staff of the Toronto and Springfield (Mass.) associations. He will assume his now duties early in March. At the conclusion of the business at the meeting of the City' Council last night, the mayor (Mr ML B. Taverner) made reference to the fact that Mr G. A. IVychcrley, of the ‘ star ’ staff had attended the meeting for the last time in his official rapacity as° a reporter. He understood that Mr Wycherley was going into business in the city, and on behalf of the members of the council be wished him every success in bis now undertaking. His Worship remarked that the relations between tho mayor and councillors and the reporters had always been of an exceedingly pleasant nature. In reply Mr Wycherley thanked the mayor for his kindly sentiments, and endorsed Mr Taverner’s remarks in regard to the happy relations between members of the council and pressmen. “ The city lias suffered an irreparable and grievous loss in the death of Mr Charles Speight,” said tho mayor (Mr ML B. Taverner) at the meeting of the City Council last night. His Worship said that Mr Spomht had not only been known to all, but bad also been beloved of all. Dunedin could ill-afford to lose the public spirited services of such gentlemen. Ho moved—- “ That tho council records its deep and sincere regret at the sudden passing of Mr Charles Speight, and tenders i(s condolences with the widow and family in their great loss.” The, motion was passed in silence, members standing for a few moments as a mark of respect. Messrs C. 11. Hayward, W. Wright, and W .MTvor left this morning for fishing in ihe IVaitaki district. They will he out of town for a few days. Recent arrivals to Ihe Grand Hotel include Mr D.
