PICTURE THEATRES

OCTAGON _ ‘ The Flag Lieutenant ’ is a British picture produced from the celebrated stage play of the same name, and produced with the co-operation of the British Admiralty. Not only is their an Australian in the featured cast, in the person of Dorothy Seacombc, but the battleship which forms the background for most of the aetjon of the picture is also closely associated with Australia. The ship is the Ii.M.S. Tiger, which at the time of the Great War was a companion ship of the H.M.A.S. Australia. ‘ TTie Flag Lieutenant’ stars in addition to Miss Sea-, combo, Henry Edwards, a distinguished British actor. The picture will have its fin a’ screening at the Octagon Theatre to-night. Special orchestral music has been selected for presentation by_the Octagon Orchestra, under the directorship of Mens. Do Rose, and some attractive dances arc given by Misses Babs Saul and Iris Gordon.

EMPIRE ‘Naughty but Nice,’ which will be screened for the last time at the Empire Theatre to-night, is undoubtedly Colleen Moore’s best starring vehicle to date. The popular and vivacious comedienne is cast in an ideal role in a story that deals with the transformation of a shy young girl from a Texas ranch to a society beauty. The theme centres about Berenice Summers, who blossoms from an unnoticed wall-flower into a fashionable school’s most popular girl She arouses the interest of Paul Carroll, and through a series of unexpected developments, introduces a total stranger to her friends as her husband. They go to a party, and every effort is made to induce the bride and groom to enter the bridal suite. Finally, however, the tangle is cleared up and Bernice finds happiness with Carroll. In addition to Miss Moore, the cast includes Claude Gillingwater, Hallam Cooley, Kathryn M'Guire, Edytlie Chapman, and Clarissa Selwynne. Included in a sterling programme is a further ‘ Stcreoscopik ’ feature. The Empire Orchestra, under Mr C. Parnell, plays an excellent musical programme. QUEEN'S ‘Hills of .Kentucky,’ the premier attraction at the Queen’s Theatre, is a photoplay that shows the acting genius of the wonder dog star, Bin-i'in-Tiu. Against beautiful outdoor backgrounds unfolds a talc of a puppy who is cast out from bis home in a period of human starvation, and who becomes the leader of a pack of dogs who ravage the countryside. Bin-Tin-Tin plays this dog, known in harrowing legend as “The Urey Ghost.” To the mountain town comes a school teacher (Dorothy Dwan) with her little crippled brother (Hilly Kent Schaeffer). There a young mountaineer (Jason Bobards) falls in love with her. His half-brother, a treacherous man of bull strength, played by Tom Santsclii, smashes in to break up the romance. The story of these lives becomes entangled with that of “The Grey Ghost” in a scries ot oiigrossibg episodes, full of surprises. ‘Three Miles Up,’ tbo second attraction, features the star A 1 Wilson in some daring stunts in the sky, and provides a picture which 'is brimful of thrills.

An excellent programme will be scicelled to-morrow. Bod La Rocque’s latest starring vehicle, \ Red Dire,’ is the principal attraction. ‘ Dance Magic,’ with Ben Lyon and Pauline Starke, is the supporting picture. PLAZA AND GRAND The limui screening of that hilarious comedy ‘ What Happened to Jones,' starring the popular comedian Beginald Denny, will take place af the Plaza and Grand 'theatres to-nigm. Buck Jones will also appear for the last time in • Hills of Peril,’ a typical western, jammed with action and packed with thrills. ‘The Bugle Call,’ a historical romance of the Great Plains, .lea luring Jackie Coogan as a bugle hoy iu a cavalry post, is one of the features to commence screening to-morrow. Jackie Coogan appears in a role now lo most of his fans—with a haircut. Ho plays a hoy approaching his teens, the son of a cavalry captain on the plains, who plays a bugle with the troop buglers, it is one of Jackie’s most ambitious roles, and is one of the biggest productions lie has ever been starred in. Claire Windsor plays the heroine of the new story, and Herbert llawlinson appears as Jackie’s father in the new play The east is a, notable one, including Bodil Hosing, Harry Todd, Johnny Mack-Brown, Sarali Paddcn, Nelson MacDowell, and Tom O’Brien. ‘ College Days, a vivid picture of university life, is on the same bill. EVERYBODY'S AND KING EDWARD 4 Braveheart,’ a picture in which wigwam and college life are happily blended, is the current attraction at Everybody’s and the King Edward Theatres. A football game and an Indian outbreak are among the big scenes. The story is dramatic, and features Rod La Rocque and Lilian Rich in the leading roles. 4 The DennBride,’ the other feature, is a farcical French comedy, showing Miss Shearer in the role of a saucy and mischievous Parisian school girl, who succeeds in winning a sophisticated boulevardier after a series of mirth-provoking incidents. Lew Cody plays the part of the boulevardier. Other members of the cast are Dorothy Sebastian, Lionel Belmore, Tenen Holtz, and Carmel Myers. The next programme at Everybody's Theatre, commencing to-morrow, promises to be something out of the ordinary. The return season of 4 The Ton Commandments’ is announced, and also ‘Dancing Mad,’ featuring Marie Corda and Harry Siedtke.'
