A civic reception to tho delegates at tho conference was tendered in the Town Hall last night, the, mayor extending a welcome, while on behalf of the Government the Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Health) welcomed the visitors, inontiyiiing especially Air Victor Bouncy, of London. The Minister said ho hoped Air Bonnoy’s visit would bo the forerunner of visits by other leading scientists. “Wo would rather see British loaders of science than those of any other country, although we like to welcome anyone.” He added that the British Medical Association rendered great service to the people, and the State was willing to help the association. The Government and Health Department would watch with very great interest the progress of the conference.
The cordial wishes of the parent body, the British Medical Association, were conveyed to delegates by Mr Victor Bonney. “ The English medical profession.” he said, “is by far snperipr as a whole to the medical profession in any other country. There _ are, of course, leaders of medicine in many countries, but it is the average standard that counts, and so long as we retain onr characteristics as a. people we shall still occupy that position.” He paid a high compliment to the medical profession of New Zealand. He said he had only twelve hours’ acquaintance with the profession medically, but was very much impressed by the standard of the papers be had hoard read, and had come to the conclusion that the standard here was at least as high as that at Home.
