DUNEDIN DRAINAGE

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING LOAN AUTHORISED The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Hoard was held last night, those present being the Mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner), in the chair, Messrs Wilson, Clark, Scott, Shaddock, Hall, and Munro. The Works Committee reported that a communication had been received from the Tainui Progress League suggesting that permission bo granted lor residents in the Tainui area to discharge stormwater into the sewer drain as a temporary means of relief until such time as the stormwater drainage system was completed. The committee was strongly of the opinion that the request should not be acceded to. The foul sewers in the Tainni area had not been designed to take stormwater, and to create a “combined” area as suggested by the league would be a retrograde step. The policy of the board was to relieve loul sewers at the pumping station of the necessity for pumping stormwater, as every drop of stormwater sent to the pumping station made it more difficult to prevent Hooding by sewage in certain low-lying areas of the city. The league had been advised accordingly. The committee also reported that authority had been granted to re-lay the Pin E.W. sewer in Osborne terrace from Glen road to Cooper street, at an estimated cost of £65. A recent investigation disclosed that this sewer was cracked and leaking. Mr Wilson moved the adoption of the report. Mr Hall, in seconding the motion, said it was satisfactory to know that the engineer had arranged for the main “ carry ” to the foreshore to go through Tainui. The report was adopted. The report of the Finance Committee, recommending the payment of accounts of £7,820 Is 4d, was adopted without discussion. A special meeting of the board passed a motion authorising the raising of a loan of £60,000, being the second instalment of a sura of £250,000 for which the board obtained statutory authority to horrow in terms of the Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Act, 1925, a first instalment of £IOO,OOO having bee” previously raised.
