THE CAVELL FILM

REFUSAL OF LICENSE HISTRI !i UK IKS’ EM I) Alf I! ASS ING POSITION. LONDON, February_ 21. The decision in ordinary circumstances would not prevent the exhibition of fho film in theatres or halls, but the significance of flic unusual expression '•inexpedient” remains to ho seen.

Mr O’Comioi' refused last night to elucidate it, ami meanwhile the distributors arc in an embarrassing situation, as they have already hooked the film to dozens of cinemas throughout the country tor a total of £dO,OUO.

Miss Sybil 'Thorndike, portrayer, of Nurso Cavell, says: “t think the censor made a very grave mistake. I am confident tho public will reverse his judgment when the film is shown.” Mr Wilcox, the producer, regards as Gilbortian the fact that the film entitled ‘Edith Cavell, Nurso and Martyr,’ from the story by Edgar Wallace, made in 1919 with tho approval of fho War Office, is still being offered to tho public under a, certificate of fho British Board of Censors. He intends to show ‘Dawn’ within a few days to the whole British Press.

The ‘Daily Express’ says; “The film censorship was established to protect the public from exhibitions which are degrading, or which might debase the public. The censors in this instance have exceeded their prerogative, and assumed the function of Government control.”
