CHEAP TYRES

A SET FOR £3 GENEROSITY OF CORPORATION At last evening’s meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Ratepayers’ Association Mr T. Stedman stated that on several occasions recently ho had hoard that it was possible to buy castoff tyres from the corporation. In one case it was said that tho old tyres could be depended on for another 1,000 miles, or even 3,000 miles. One man had stated that lie had bought four old tyres for £3, and he had assured tho speaker that he had every hope of getting 5,000 miles out of them. hi a particular instance it was stated that 6,000 miles had been done. “If private owners can do this, why can’t tho corporation?” asked Mr Stedman. Some discussion arose as to whether or not the matter should ho made public. The Chairman (Mr Ansell) settled it by stating that when a. member brought a matter up it was for public information.

Mr Forrester remarked that the tramways people might have cast the tyres aside as not being safe, but others might ho willing to take a risk which the corporation was not prepared to take. Probablv tho tyres had been turned down by an export before they were thrown out. Mr Ansell: If what Mr Stedman says is true, tho matter should be investigated. Mr J. T. Cooper moved that a subcommittee or deputation, comprising Mr Stedman, the chairman, and the secretary interview the chairman of tho Tramways Committee.

Mr Sincock: A letter would do. AVe can overdo the interviewing.

In answer to a question, Mr Stedman stated he should say the matter had been going on for the last twelve months. It came definitely under his notice last month and on two previous occasions.

Mr Ansell moved that the association write to the City Council drawing attention to tho alleged maladministration in tramway matters.
