CHILDREN'S PART IN HOME DUTIES
For a woman who does her own work, system is a very important factor, but it should bo supplemented by expecting and demanding a certain amount of this quality from every member of the family, excepting, of course, the babies. "Children of tender years can be taught to save others, namely, by getting out their playthings, putting one sot away before taking out another, and in things of a like nature. Recently I asked a mother of a large family how it was possible to have her home so well appointed. Her answer was; “That’s easy enough. Every one of my children has a tablet hanging in plain sight by the bed. On it are written the daily duties, with time appointed for each. No work is given too onerous for the ago of the child. His really surprising how much they accomplish. If any duty is neglected, no other member is allowed to perform it, and the visible discomfort to the family (although trilling) is a good object lesson to the delinquent. “Aly oldest girl, who is sixteen, and goes to college, is tho mender and darner ot the iamily; also attends to the lamps and gas globes, “Ella, another daughter, fourteen, sets and ‘ unsets ’ (as she calls it) the table; washes the glass and silverware; keeps the latter polished. My boys help their father, and he regulates their work. My youngest child, a boy ot four, was discovered crying bitterly, and after much persuasion and between sobs, ejaculated: 1 Everybody has a letter by his crib but me. Howard wants one.’ His father immediately wrote one: ‘Howard’s daily duties—keeping paths and lawns free from sticks and papers.’ His work is attended to conscientiously, and is remarked by the others.’ ’— v Everylady’s.’
