SCOUT NOTES
[By Totem.] Swimming at ilio St. Clair Baths supplemented the usual parade of the Ist Dunedin (Rovers) on Thursday evening last. A programme of events could not be carried out owing to lack of time. The troop paraded at Bethune’s Gully on Saturday afternoon, when the motor cycle trials were held. Rovers were posted at intervals along the road, with flags to signal instructions. The troop will parade at Duke street nest Thursday at 7.30 p.m. The Ist Dunedin (Roslyn) Troop held its weekly parade on Friday at the Coronation Hall, Maori Hill, when there was a fair attendance. The troop was divided into two sections, one of new boys, who did tenderfoot work under Leader Smith; and the other of old hoys, who were instructed in first-class work by the Scooter. This was followed by some signalling. The whole troop then indulged in games such as whip-the-ent, and a relay race. There are a good number of new boys, most of whom have had preliminary training in the Wolf Cubs. The 2nd Dunedin (Mornington) Troop held its weekly parade on Saturday evening last. There was a poor muster on account of the numerous picnics, and the carnival. The Scouter said that the next two parades would decide whether there should be any Easter camp. One recruit came up from the pack. The night was " free and easy,” and songs were sung and individual items given. The Scouter gave a talk on the Scout law. After repeating the Scout law the troop was dismissed. There was a good parade of the 4th (North Dunedin) Troop on Friday night. The evening’s work consisted of semaphore signalling, ambulance work, pioneering, and proficiency badge work. The playing of a new game completed the work of the night. During the evening Mr and Mrs Oration visited the troop. The sth (Dunedin) Ocean Beach Troop paraded at headquarters at the St. Kilda tram terminus on Saturday night. The Scouter instructed the troop about the parade for field day on Saturday, the 25th. The troop will parade at the Scout Hall at 1.45 p.mFrom there it will proceed to Chisholm Park. After giving these instructions inspection of the troop was held. After repeating the Scout law the troop dismissed. The 7th Dunedin (Anderson’s flay) Troop held its summer camp at Taien Beach from January 21 to 28, on the property of Mr and Mrs Agncw. Scouter Agncw was in charge, and throughout the camp ran perfectly. The camp was visited by Mr Somerville and Mr Wheeler, members of the Troop Committee, who stayed for a night. The Scouts thank Mr Wheeler and Mr Somerville for the conveyances to and from camp, and for the canteen; the Misses Wither and White, who sent some food; and Mr M'Kilay,
Mayor of Lawrence, who gave ttic campers afternoon tea on the way home; also Mr and Mrs Agncw, who gave permission to camp on their property, and supplied the camp witti milk and eggs. The troop started on Friday, February K), a prominent feature being the large number of now boys. The committee was present. Last Friday the troop was rearranged, and another patrol formed. The patrols entering for the competitions are Owls, signalling, Bulldogs, ambulance, and the Rams pioneering. After repeating the “ Promise,” the troop dismissed. A review of the troops roll and a discussion of proposed rearrangements in the patrols, taking the form of a troop pow-wow, led by Scouter, formed the first part of the parade of the 9th Dunedin Mohicans on Wednesday evening last. Outdoor practice of semaphore signalling at approximately a quarter of a mile distance between the two stations proved that the troop has several good signallers in the making. Troop! Please not, parade on Thursday evening, at 7 o’clock, instead of Wednesday. Pass the word around!
The parade of the Roslyn Panther Pack was held on Wednesday last, when nineteen hoys answered the rollcall. Owing to a number of the Cubs having gone into the Scouts, it was found necessary to appoint new Sixers. After this had been done the general work was carried out. The games for the. evening consisted of “cat and the mouse,” “whip the cat,” and “bull in the ring.” The repeating of the “ grand howl ” brought the parade to a close.
On Tuesday evening the Roslyn Leopard Pack held its second meeting of the year. There was a good muster of Cubs, numbering about twenty. Games took tbc greater part of the evening. About 8.15 the pack dismissed after repeating the promise. The Mornington ' Wolf Cub Pack parade was well attended last Wednesday night. First Star was taken, and night, then a half-hour was spent out of doors. Mr and Mrs Kerr and Mr Gridgeman visited the pack, the. hitter taking the clubs for a game, which was enjoyed by all. Tile 4th North Dunedin Pack paraded at George street, as usual, last Friday night. The work period of the evening was devoted chiefly to knot-tying, after which the pack was inspected by the A.C.M. Games were held till the close of the evening, when the pack dismissed with the “ grand howl.”
