CRICKET
OTAGO V. AUSTRALIA The match between the Otago representative team and the touring Australians will he commenced on Friday next. The Australian team is a very strong one, containing as it does most of the players who will represent Australia in the test matches against England next season. One of the chief objects of the visit is to give the players an opportunity of practising together and so attaining the necessary combination for the test matches. The outstanding player of the team is W. H. Ponsford, who has broken several batting records. TV. M. Woodfull is another batsman of great ability, and when these two open together some sparkling batting is usually witnessed. A. E. Kippax is an attractive batsman of the Macartney type. V. Richardson, the captain of the team, in addition to being a lino batsman, is a fieldsman of unusual ability. All the other players are good all-round cricketers. The Otago team is the strongest the province has put in the field this season, and it is expected to put up a good fight against the visitors.
