BAND CONTESTS OPEN

G GRADE QUICKSTEP TO MOSCIEL THIRD IN TEST SELECTION [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 19. The New Zealand annual brass bands’ contest was opened on Saturday with the B and C grade brass bands and Highland pipe bands’ quicksteps in the afternoon, and C grade and pipe bands’ tests in the evening. The weather was perfect for the quickstep fixtures, and a very large crowd witnessed the events. For the first time provision for pipe bands has been made in the programme, and pipers have come from all parts of the dominion to take part in the contest. Six A grade bands are competing this year, four for the B grade, three lor the C grade, and seven pipe bands. The judges are Mr E. Jackson, of Brisbane. who will decide the test selections, and Mr W. S. King, of Christchurch. who will adjudicate in the solo events. A full programme is mapped out for the. week, cortcluding with the A grade quickstep on Saturday. The prize money totals £I,OOO, and there are many special prizes. The following are Saturday’s results THE QUICKSTEPS. —C Grade.—

THE TESTS. There was a large attendance at King Edward Barracks in ih© evening, when Ll.j C grade lest selection was decided, and also the Highland pipe hands’ selection. Hegg and Co.’s cup for the C grade band gaining the highest number of points in music, including quicksteps. —Highland Pipe Bauds.— There was no set test piece in tho Highland pipe bands’ section, hut each band had to play a selection comprising a march, slow march, Strathspey, and re !.
