POLICE COURT
SATURDAY, February 18. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M$ DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, who did not appea*> was fined the amount of bis bail (20s), iu default forty-eight hours’ imprison* ment, on a charge of drunkenness. Thomas Henry Smith pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness and procuring liquor while prohibited.—Seniorsergeant Quarterraain said that the accused had a formidable list of pre* vious convictions, and had twice already been on “the island.” A brother of the accused gave evidence, and asked that the latter be sent back to Roto Roa.—The Magistrate said the accused was, apparently, quite hopeless; the only thing to do was to send him away for another period of isolation. He would be convicted and ordered to be detained at Roto Roa for a period of twelve months on the first charge, and on the second charge he would be convicted and discharged. WELLINGTON CASE. A young man, for whom Mr Irwiil appeared, was charged with .having supplied to a girl a noxious thing, knowing it was intended to be used for an unlawful purpose.—Chief-de-tective Cameron said the accused was arrested last night by Detectives Beer and Farquharson. He asked for,a remand to Wellington.—Accused was remanded to appear at Wellington on the 29th inst Bail was fixed at £IOO, with one surety of £loo.—His Worship made an order suppressing the name of the accused until the facta had been gone into.
