CHINESE FINANCES
PANIC IN THREE PROVINCES j ARRESTS AND EXECUTIONS 900 FIRMS SUSPEND BUSINESS. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright SHANGHAI, February 17. (Received February 18, at 1.18 a.in.) An economic crisis and a financial panic reign in three of the eastern provinces controlled by General' Chang Tso-lin, owing to the depreciation of currency. Chang attempted to remedy this by arresting and executing a number of leading exchange brokers on charges of upsetting the money market. The root of the evil is the reckless unrest caused by the issue of notes which are forced upon the population for the purpose of buying war supplies. The notes are worthless. Nine hundred native firms have suspended j payment in the last two months.
