HEALTH OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly'meeting of the committee of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the Plunket rooms yesterday. Mrs Johnstone presided,and there were also present Lady Allen, Mesdames Brown, J. A. Hanan, John Watson, Fraser, Cleghorn, Cunninghame, Williams, Wilson, Arundel, G. Gallaway, and A. Barnett. Apologies were received from Mesdames Cairney, Dove, Mandeno, and Marshall Macdonald. The Secretary presented a statement of the society’s finances to date, and accounts were passed for payment. Tho resignation of Mrs Clappertoii as a member of the committee was accepted with regret. Mrs A. Barnett was granted leave of absence from tho committee during her absence from New Zealand. The Matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital reported as follows for the month ended December 61 last;—Number of patients admitted during the month, 17 mothers and 24 babies; discharged during the -month, 16 mothers and 22 babies; death during month, 1 baby; largest number in residence on any one day, 5 mothers and 20 babies; number of patients in residence on December 61, 5 mothers and 20 babies. Tho death was a small premature baby, which died soon after admission. Patients were admitted from Beaumont, Waimate, Gore, Kakanui, Ranfnrly, Balclutha, Oamaru, Waitahuna, Dunedin, and suburbs. Gifts and donations for Christmas w r ere received from the following:—Mesdames Hurst, Tyrie, Hogg, and Nurse Conigreve, also Messrs Bartlett, Romison, Colgau, Ferguson, and members of the committee. The following nurses completed their Plunket training;—Nurses Le Cornu, Wilson, Green, Conigreve, Fairweather, Doyle, Cliff, Blake, King, Corbett, Gott, M'Kinnon, Houghton, Rountree, Thompson, and Houston. The following purses completed their Karitane training:—Nurses Rose and Fairborn. Tho following nurses commenced their Plunket training:—Nurses Francis, Benn, Waineke, Doward, • Musgrave, Stevenson, Hawkes, Thomas, Burnett, Samson, Harris, Willocks_, Ellis, Philpott, Shepherd, and Carmichael. There wore 25S visitors during tho month. The alterations and additions were finished by Christmas, and we are already enjoying the extra room and better facilities for keeping the babies in the fresh air. The new verandah is a great boon. The Matron of the ,Karitane-Harris Hospital reported for the month ended January 31:— Number of patients admitted during the month, 16 mothers and 18 babies; discharged during the month, 15 mothers and 20 babies; largest number in residence on any one day, 6 mothers and 22 babies; number in residence on January 31, 3 mothers and 19 babies. Patients were admitted from Dunback, Balclutha, Queenstown, Dunedin, and suburbs. A gift of eighteen bibs was received from an anonymous donor, and a donation of four shovels was received from the Westport Coal Company. Nurses Davie and Astley commenced their course of Plunket training. Nurse MUlroy finished her course. Nurses S. Bingham and Greig finished training, and Nurses Reid and M. Bingham commenced training. Stuart street—269 mothers, 206 babies, 23 older children; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Roslyn—--93 mothers, 92 babies. 14 older children; Morniiigton—42 mothers, 38 babies, 5 older children; visits paid to KelseyYaralla Kindergarten—69 mothers, 58 babies, 27 older children; visits paid to out-patients’ department, Public Hospital—ls mothers, 5 babies, 10 older children; bottles of humanise,d milk sent out from T. and P. Dairy, 3,210. The Plunket Nurses for North and Central Dunedin districts reported for the month of January:—Number of babies on the list, 818; babies breastfed (including partly), 246; new cases for the month (babies only), 31; babies breast-fed (including partly), new cases. 27; new cases expectant mothers, 6; visits paid to homes, 543; visits paid to central rooms, Stuart street—--321 mothers, 242 babies. 77 older children ; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Roslyn—lol. mothers, 106 babies, 22 older children; visits paid to KelseyYaralla Kindergarten—6B mothers, 58 babies, 66 older children; visits paid to out-patients’ department, Public Hospital—7 mothers, 2 babies, 9 older children; visits paid to Plunket Rooms, Mnrnington—62 mothers, 59 babies, 12 older children; bottles of humanised milk sent out from Taieri Dairy, 2,811. Tho Plunket Nurse for South Dunedin district reported for the month of December; Number of babies on the list, 486; babies breast-fed (including partly), 130; now cases for the month (babies only), 21; babies breast-fed (including partly), new cases, 18; visits paid to homes, 286; visits paid to Plunket rooms, King Edward street, South Dunedin—22o mothers, 198 babies. 52 older children. The Plunket nurse for Anderson’s Bay district and outstations (south line) reported for the mouth of December :—Number of babies on tho list, 227; babies breast-fed (including partly), 106; new cases for the month (babies only), 15; babies breast-fed (including partly), new cases, 13; visits paid to central office and Anderson’s Bay—loß mothers, 81 babies, 9 older children; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Mosgiel—67 mothers, 35 babies, 14 older children; visits paid to Plunket rooms, Ontram—l4 mothers, 13 babies, 1 older child; visits paid to homes—Anderson’s Bay’ 85, Mosgiel 9, Abbotsford, Green Island, and Burnside 59. The following visits were paid to outstations —Mosgiel 3, Abbotsford 5, Green Island 6, Bumside 5, Outram 3. For January:— Number of babies on the list, 235; babies breast-fed (including partly), 109; new cases for the month (babies only), 14; babies breast-fed (including partly), new cases, 12; number of visits paid to central office and Anderson’s Bay—ls 6 mothers, 145 babies, 18 older children; number of visits paid to Plunket rooms, Mosgiel—so mothers, 41 babies, 8 older children; number of visits paid to Plunket rooms, Outram —l2 mothers, 12 babies, 1 older child; visits paid to homes—Anderson’s Bay 87, Mosgiel 18, Abbotsford, Green Island, ami Burnside 41. The following visits were paid to outstations—Mosgiel 4, Abbotsford 4. Green Island 4, Burnside 4, Outram 2. The resignation of Sister Graham from the staff of the Karitane-Harris Hospital was received with regret. The members of the committee expressed their appreciation of the assistance given by Port Chalmers ladies in knitting woollen vests for the babies at the Karitane-Harris Hospital
