CARNIVAL AT ST. CLAIR

NEARLY £BOO TAKEN IN TWO NIGHTS Though there was not such a large attendance at the carnival at St. Clair last night, owing to Friday being the lato shopping night, the public responded liberally to the appeal of the St. Clair Improvement Society to help in providing more dressing accommodation and improving the beach. Tho total receipts last night were £33.3, this amount being exclusive of a number of donations. '[lie carnival was again visited by the “ Administrator of White Island ” and his retinue. His Excellency thanking tho public for their support and trusting it would it would bo continued on Saturday afternoon and evening, when there would be special attractions. Last night’s crowd, which was estimated at about 8,000, entered into tho spirit of the carnival, which passed oft most successfully. There were few who did not purchase a badge, and the various stale and the amusement park were again crowded. On the advice of the police the committee had removed one of the devices, but all the others,, the throw-downs, roll-downs, dart games, etc., were going at full swing. Tliis afternoon there was a tba Inshow and a bathing_ beauties’ parade, and another attraction was the lifesaving competition in the surf for the Sagar Shield. A ladies’ life-saving team also gave a display. A great crowd is expected to-night, when all the “fun of the fair” will be there for those who come. What could be more enjoyable than a night on the esplanade in the cool of the evening, with amusement aplenty provided, and an opportunity to do something to help in improving the beach. The winning badge last night was that with of which will receive a prize of the vane. of two..guineas if he presents his ticket at the treasurer’s office in the pavilion. There will be a lucky prize number again to-night, and the owner of the prize will receive a trophy valued at £5. | The takings for the two nights of the t carnival total nearly. £BOO. I
